(Brewed for the "Metro" supermarket chain); In an abbey great and towery, lived brothers talented in brewery. Ale this heavenly, alas!, led to drinkery...and now its rediscovery! Can you resist temptation?

Bouteille 341ml.

Originally rated February 2005. This beer was exclusively sold through a chain of stores called Metro, a famous Quebec grocerie chain. It poured a dark brown opaque colour with a thick and creamy head. Retention was medium and the lacing was low. Aromas were of spices and so was the taste, with hints of nuts. Very smooth and dry aftertaste. Not the best Unibroue product, but a descent brew that goes down very easy.

33cl bottle. pours dark brown, off white head quickly becoming flat. Aroma, darf fruits, strong malt/caramel nose, some roast and forward notes of licorice. Taste, malty, caramel are just strong and very enjoyable, dark fruits, raisins/prune, candi sugar light chocolate and just prominent licorice/réglisse mouthfeel. Interesting and complex.

Bottled (from lahoublonnaire.be). Very dark brown colour with minor head. Aroma is raisins, some mild alcohol, spices, yeast, dark berries and licorice. Flavour is caramel malts, dark berries, some slight oak barrel, mild licorice and some slight alcohol. Gets better the warmer it gets. At room temperature very pleasant.

(Bottle 34,1 cl) Courtesy of Siroy. Hazy, dark brown with a small, creamy, beige head. Vinous aroma with some dried fruit. Medium body, sweetish notes of roasted malt and dried fruit - has a very soft mouthfeel. Very subdued bitterness. Less yeasty and carbonated than what’s the norm from Unibroue - and hence quite delicate. 080507

2004 bottle aged consumed on 11/12/05. Tons of carbonation, still, with a chestnut (dark) colored body. Transparent at the top (very settled out), but moving to lightly hazy as the sediment from the bottom is mixed in (not intentionally). Head is a light, light mocha-white and is well-retained. Aroma is dry, lighter than expected, with a surprising floral hops note being the most prominent thing I pick up on. Soft, even, Unibroue yeast. Only a bit of light toffee and very light cola-like notes. Drinking it begins with a soft, velvety mouthfeel and lightly sweet vegetal notes. Some light chocolate cola notes with light vanilla and dry yeast. Very wheaty, overall. Eases in to some soft toffee covered raisins. Very gentle mouthfeel. Yeast is dry, but clean. Vegetal nature passes. Very light alcohol apparency. Medium to medium-light body. Light brown breadiness on the end, with a touch of spicy esters. A classic Dunkelbelgianweizen.

[At Fete de la Biere 2004, Lausanne] A very dark brown beer with a fine lasting light brown head. The aroma is sweet malty and so is the flavor, but the flavor also contains notes of roasted bread and caramel. Rather simple and too sweet, but OK.

Brown color; brownish generous and creamy head. Simple malt and caramel aroma. Ordinary Dubbel body, just some light malt and caramel, quite dry, without character.
