Watch out for this evil character… Borders legends say the Dunter, a malevolent red-capped goblin, inhabits ruined castles and guards the English-Scottish borders from intruders. This evil creature is impossible to outrun, but we like to think he'll let you pass if you have share a wee dram of his potion. The truth of this legend will never be known, however, it is irrefutable that the Dark Dunter is bursting of oatmeal and chocolate aromas, complemented by dark roasted malts and a rich aftertaste.

Cask at PoW, Aberdeen. It pours dark ruby - black with a decent tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, sticky, sweet, treacle, molasses, malt loaf, burnt brown sugar, dark fruits and fruit cake. The taste is initially dry, but rather fruity, bitter - sweet, date, plum, fruit cake, earthy roast, roasted malt, coffee grounds, cacao and malt loaf with a dry, toasty finish. Lighter end of medium body and fine carbonation. A good deal more vibrant than the bottled variation. Fruity and pretty tasty.

Bottle from Morrisons. Dark ruby with a thin beige head that slowly fades. Steady carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of biscuit and oats. Flavour of caramel and wood. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. Earthy and rich. A thicker body and this would be pretty special.

(bottle, 4.8% abv) Dark brown, almost black colour with a beige and medium-sized foamy head. Roasty malty with notes of ground coffee and dark chocolate. Moderately bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Roasty and slightly smoked malty taste with hints of coffee, dark chocolate; dry and mildly roasty bitter finish with a delicately tartness and notes of coffee in the aftertaste. Pleasant. 16.II.18

Pours dark brown from the bottle. A creamy tan head lingers for much of the duration. Aroma is toast, chocolate, caramel, light berry hints, but on the whole subdued. Taste has a mild toast bitterness up front, then turns bittersweet almost immediately, with caramel and brown sugar accompanying the toast notes. Finishes much the same but a hint of berries and a touch sourer. Impressive range and depth for a beer of this ABV. Classified as a stout but feels more like a cross between a stout and an ESB, with more emphasis on the latter. Body stays fairly light, carbonation is moderate. Overall, a pleasant surprise and sessionable. Would like to have a few on tap.
