27/XI/14 - on tap @ Gent Horeca Expo - BB: n/a (2014-1411)
Clear dark red to brown beer, irregular beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit fishy, sweet, some banana, very weird... first pour out of the tap line since last night? MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: bit sweet, caramel, metallic touch, little bitter, soft roastedness. Aftertaste: caramel, little bitter, metallic finish. Pretty weak.

250 ml unfiltered bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Hazy dark brown colour, large off-white head. Moderate aroma of malts, caramel and dust, hints of spices. Malty flavour, nice sweetness, caramel, brown kandij sugar and mild spices, slightly warming mouthfeel. Pleasant to drink.

Bottle-fermented Christmas beer from Leroy, with thin, off-white head and bronze colour. Caramelly profile, fruity, raisins, brown sugar, spicy yeastiness; caramel malts in the mouth, straightforward, with fruity sweetishness and slight roasted bitterness in the finish, thin body. Admittedly this is not a big, opulent, thick Christmas ale like many of its congeners, but Leroy beers are an echo from the past, when beers just had to serve their purpose without exhibiting pompous gastronomical ambitions. I guess this is hard to grasp for the hipsters following big craft ales, but with respect to Belgian beer history and culture, it is a good thing that things like this - and table beers, in which Leroy also does a very good job - have existed, and still do. Respect.

Donker roodbier met mooie schuimkraag. Smaak is verrassend, fruitig, kers, framboos en licht zuur, gemiddeld bitter. Uitstekend bier wat lang blijft hangen.

Bottle from Hammelhus, Hammel - pours dark amber brown colour, with almost no head. Has a sweetish caramel, malty aroma and taste, with some slight dark fruits, and only a weak hint of spice. Pretty weak watery body, and boring overall.

260ml for 800 yen at Standing 1020. I’m surprised to see a Belgian beer on tap here as it is usually just Japanese craft beer on tap. A dark ruby brown, they scooped out the head & filled it to the brim! Served cold, not getting much on the nose. The taste is rich bitter malty caramel with cinnamon. Tasty, very Christmasy but not overpoweringly so. I like it, it has a nutty aftertaste, a pleasing Belgian flavor but all I get from the aroma is a Belgian yeast & cinnamon scent. This is exceptionally balanced with no booziness. Nice subtle spicy nose like a malty cinnamon tinged saison. The taste matches that impression, medium bodied goodness.
