The tripel in this Bornem series of authentic abbey beers, brewed for the Sint-Bernardus abbey in Bornem. Officially recognized as an authentic abbey beer since 1999. Used as the mother beer of many aliases.

11.2 ounce bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a thin frothy white head. Average head retention. Aroma of citrus, caramel, banana. The taste is bread, caramel, spice, citrus, apple. Medium-full bodied. High carbonation. Faint bit of booze.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm) Golden amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of orange peel, spices and canned peaches. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, orange marmalade and a generous, spicy bitterness in a finish with a certain alcohol bite. Almost full body, fairly sweet. Spiced up fruit salad in a can. Nice one.

This yellow-gold beer smells okay. Taste is quite okay too, but the mouthfeel is way too crazy. Lots and lots of co2 bubbles exploding their way into your stomach. Burping inevitable. Don’t drink this with the family in law.

Golden tripel, white head. Aroma of malts, the box where you keep apples for winter, bit sweet, no real hops tone. Flavour is bit sweet, malts, again the slightly rotting apples, madeira. Something is wrong here. The bottle was a gift, American label, but no BestBefore date can be found. The madeira tones makes me think it is quite old, and that it’s not happy in old age. Bottle from Asao. Clear deep gold to light amber with tall, foamy head. Herb and mineral aroma, fruits, a bit tropical but dry, alcohol. Strong, dry flavor, fruity and a bit spicy and herbal. Rather hot and peppery. Decent, but boozy.

A BBE 27.5.08 bottle stored cool and dark. Cloudy gold beer. Sharp start. Malty spice with a bit of watery grapefruit. Then the alcohol shows but unusually presents as vodka and gin like flavours. Finishes sharp and crisp.

Dodgy-looking old bottle with no date. Pours almost clear orange with a frothy white head. high bead. Orange, lemon, clove, white pepper aroma. Orange and sugary sweetness with a little dough and a very dry spicy finish. Alcohol hardly noticeable. Highly carbonated mouthfeel is a bit excessive even for a tripel. Otherwise a very solid beer.

Bottle. A hazy golden coloured pour with a large white head on top. Yeasty, spice aroma. Tastes malty, quite sweet, fruity, banana, hoppy, dry. A tasty Belgian Triple.

Came in the Exclusive Belgian ales gift pack, with 5 other brews (Christmas 2005). Best before 16/02/07. Pours a cloudy golden honey colour with an orange hue. The head is white, fluffy, enormous and leaves good chunky lacing. Alcohol is present in the nose, with some Belgian yeast, sweet honey, green apples and hints of lemon. Slightly tarty mouthfeel. Spicy taste, with some of them apples, and a dry finish. Too bad, some metallic touch shows up somewhere halfway. Pretty good other than that.
