What does it mean? Yes, what indeed does it all mean. Meaning of course is elusive and illusive. It can’t or shouldn’t be found on this bottle. Should it? Yet what if it was? Would you begin to look for pearls of wisdom or life direction on a beer label? Perhaps it’s been there all along. Since meaning is a mere illusion, perhaps we shouldn’t let it have any influence on our destiny. This particular beer refused to succumb to the illusion of meaning or allow capricious parameters to have any influence on its own fermented fate. Are we even asking the right question? Are you feeling frustrated in the emptiness? If so, that could be because someone got to this beer before you, and thus there’s a reason for that emptiness. It’s empty. And if so, perhaps there indeed is not any meaning for you here after all.
Style over Substance, or Substance over the scriptures of Style? The latter, thank you very much. Twice.

Bottle. Musty/astringent chocolate malt and berry aroma. Black color with moderate head. Sweet chocolate malt up front with a moderately bitter orange peel and cedar finish. BrewDog again pushing the envelope - this is damn tasty - makes me wish that Black Belgian Style Double India Pale Ales were more common.

Bottle @ home. Pours a black appearance with a small tan head but not thick like an imperial stout. Mild chocolate malty, mildly spicy, earthy hoppy nose. Bitter, chocolate malty, earthy, dull hoppy flavor. This bottle has seen its better days.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear black color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with average retention. Aroma of roasted malt is more powerful and dry then expected. Taste is dominated by dry roasted malt notes with light subtle coffee notes. Body is somewhat light with OK carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I can’t say I was truly impressed by that one – hops profile was more subdued then expected and dry roasted malt was overly dominant.

Purchased at BrewFellas, Nicosia. Near black. Not much head, but it looks nice anyway. The aroma is roasty, chocolate, Stone-like sterile but not at all bad. There’s some light hop in there. Smooth, sweetish with leafy hop notes and a rich milk chocolate character. Nicely balanced, a good one.

Very nice dark color. Smell and palate are good as well, not too much carbs.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours very dark, almost black, with a nice staying head. This has really taken the ageing well, improving tremendously on earlier tastings. Aroma is truly amazing, bringing a picturesque seafront to mind. Here’s a lot going on with tar, peat, smoke and burned malt, together with coffee, liquorice, leather and some truly dark fruits. The flavour follows up with smoke, burned malt, and cold coffee. Here’s also a good deal of hops balancing this one to near perfection, and giving the finish a sharp, good and lasting after taste.

Bottle. It pours a clear, very dark brown body and a finger thick dark beige head. The aroma is slightly roasted, with chocolate, coffee, hints of vanilla and a nice hoppyness. There’s lots of nice piney hops and bitterness in the flavor, along with chocolate and some coffee. Full-bodied and warming. Lasting bitterness in the end. A lovely beer that it would be a shame if left retired. 101229

11.2 ounce bottle into tulip, Batch 352, 12/19/10. Pours clear dark brown color with a dense 2 finger tan head with great retention that reduces to a lacing cap. Some fairly decent glass lacing. Aromas of citrus, roasted malts, coffee and some caramel. Taste of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, citrus, and caramel. Might also have some smoke in there as well. There is a fairly prominent citrus bitterness on the finish, but it is not overly strong, and it is balanced out well with the rest of the beer. The bitterness lingers for a bit after the finish with roasted flavors. The mouthfeel is extremely creamy and smooth, the alcohol is hardly even noticed other than a very small hint of a warming after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied. Overall a very tasty beer, I am fairly impressed.

12 oz. bottle, pours almost black with a reddish hue. Aroma of molasses, dark fruits, burnt caramel and strong hops. Flavour begins with the rich sweet malts, molasses, dark fruits and ends with a blast of hops that lingers. Very well made and enjoyable.

Bottle from Brewdog. It pours jet black with a thick foamy tan head. The nose is wood, liquorice, coffee, leather and a hint of spice. The taste is rich-roast coffee, liquorice, caramel, charcoal, burnt sugar, sesame seed and a little ginger. The finish is long, bitter and dry. It’s a really enjoyable offering from Brewdog.
