Flemish-style red ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries

Oude Tart is a Flemish-style red ale aged in red wine barrels. This version had raspberries added for the final stages of barrel-aging. It's pleasantly sour and velvety, with hints of leather, tangy dark fruit, ripe raspberries and toasty oak. While the base beer is one of the more classic styles that we make, it's not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French border, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. We're doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the West Coast.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Yaron's place. Brown. Great jammy raspberries, cobwebs, oak, cellar, musty, a bit vinous, sour, a bit lemony. Really great.

75cl bottle from mikkeller shop. Oude Tart' with raspberries famille rue 2017. Brown with a light brown head. Fairly complex sweet and tart aroma, honey, malts, sour beer, fresh fruits, red berries. flavor is quite sourish and tart, clean flavor of fresh fruits as well, and notes of red wine and wood. alc. well hidden. good fruit beer, sour, fresh, not sweet - and with a slight flemish sour twist to it.. remarkably little the wood creeps into the flavor given that it's been on wood for 18 months. or perhaps it just blends in so well i don't really notice. good stuff.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/5/2017. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red, light orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big sour/tart/tangy red raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, cherry, cranberry, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red grape/wine, toasted oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of raisin, fig, date, roast, leathery/musty/lacto funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of raspberries, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge sour/tart/tangy red raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, cherry, cranberry, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red grape/wine, toasted oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of raisin, fig, date, roast, leathery/musty/lacto funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of sour/tart/tangy red raspberries, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, cherry, cranberry, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red grape/wine, toasted oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, raisin, fig, date, roast, leathery/musty/lacto funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of raspberries, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a fantastic malt/tart/sourness, and tangy/tannic fruit balance; with no puckering flavors after the finish. A bit crisp finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tart/sourness, and fruit/wine tang/tannins after the finish. medium-plus carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.7%. Overall this is an amazing fruited Flanders red ale. All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of raspberries, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, wine barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the modestly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish; not overly lactic. Amazing balance of super juicy/jammy raspberries, Brett/Lacto complexity, and wine barrel presence; with a great dark/bready malt backbone against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with crisp acidic/tangy/tannic drying. A highly amazing offering, and top tier style example. Wonderful stuff all around.

Poured from a 2027 vintage, 750 ml bottle. Aroma is fairly raspberry forward with hints of other berries, raisin and cherry. Light caramel and toffee malt notes with a bit of toasted bread and faint chocolate. Faint oak notes and hints of alcohol. Pours brown with red hues and a large, thick, frothy, dark tan head that recedes somewhat quickly to the edges where it lingers for a bit before disappearing. No lacing and small legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with a fairly strong and slightly sharp acidity. Moderately strong malt notes with light bitterness and hints of alcohol warmth. Caramel and toffee with light chocolate and toasted bread. Moderate raspberry notes with light raisin and cherry notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice dark sour with a lot of raspberry notes. The fruit seems to balance out the dark sour notes that I'm not really a fan of.
