American Double IPA

Single Malt and Single Hop Double IPA, brewed with only Australian Galaxy hops and Premium Northwest Pilsner Malt. The Galaxy hops take center stage and are joined by the very intense bitterness typical of this variety of hops.

Flavor
A balanced aroma gives intense passion fruit, light guava, and herbal notes similar to thyme, and hints of exotic citrus. The hop aroma is balanced by light honey notes that are characteristically associate with the malt of a crisp Pilsner. The flavor has an initial rush of tropical fruit and herbal notes that linger intensely. The Galaxy hops take center stage, and after several seconds, the juicy hop notes are joined by the very intense bitterness typical of this Australian variety.

Ingredients
SMaSH Galaxy starts with our glacier-fed water from the Juneau Icefield and our exclusive ale yeast that is a hallmark of the Alaskan style. From there, the ingredient list is short: Australian Galaxy hops and Premium Northwest Pilsner Malt.

Fairly clear deep amber and copper coloured body with a thickish, five to six centimetre tall off-white head that takes a long time to fade. Aroma of deep hops with grapefruit, grass, pine and resin with a lot of malts coming through as well with some nuttiness and a good caramelised sugar bite. Medium-bodied; Rich nutty and earthy flavours dominate here up front with a lot of bitterness from the hops, but nothing too pungent or deep, with a good balance from the rich malts that show some biscuits, but mostly earth and toffee. Aftertaste shows some hop bitterness and a wide range of malts with a little yeast and alcohol noticeable and a dry finish with a lot of bitterness. Overall, a fairly nice and 'typical' Imperial-ish IPA with a deep hop bitterness from the alpha acids with a supportive malt backbone and the only real difference here is how easy the alcohol comes through. Nice to sample, even a long way from Juneau, still up here in Interior Alaska! I sampled this 65 cL bottle, purchased from College Garage Wine and Liqours in Fairbanks, Alaska on 24-June-2021 for US$5,99 sampled in my hotel room here in Denali [Healy], Alaska on 25-June-2021.

So I pick up a can that is a couple of months past best-by date. Oh well, I have done much, much worse on that. Pint can, opened and into my big snifter. A pale, medium yellow liquid, and because of a heavy pour, lots and lots of pure white foam. I think I detect some lacing early on. Interesting nose, tilting more towards the malt than the hops. A nice taste, generally inoffensive said nicely. A decent hoppiness, expected more of it, some tropical, pineapple and grass. I hoped for it to be bigger.

Slightly hazy golden color with a medium white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lace. Piney hops, fruit and malt in the nose. Medium too full body with a resiny hop character and notes of tropical fruit and bready malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a piney and citrusy hop aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

355ml bottle, drank in California on Christmas Day 2019. Light haze to the pale golden body, white wisp on top. Hoppy little number with a piney and citrusy presence in both the aroma and taste. Fairly bitter and dry throughout.

Bottle from National Brewery Centre, Burton. 8.5%. Mid- to dark gold, clear with a small film of white head. Wildflower and pine aroma with ammonia-like hop. Bittersweet taste, astringent and boozy with an intense hop burn at the end. TCP and bitter berry in the aftertaste. Intense but loses so much of the subtle fruitiness of Galaxy, although there's a pleasant apricot after-aftertaste about a minute after the sip. Heavily carbonated. Decent all in all.

355ml bottle from National Brewery Centre, Burton on Trent. Pours clear gold, small white head. Pine, resin, orange on the nose, continuing to taste with an old school IPA feel, plenty of caramel malt and a confident bitterness.
