Light haze on this amber - brown beer. Tidy pale tan head. Smooth palate with a crispy trailing edge. Smooth and creamy malt that is also sweetish. Floral sweetness, especially on the back end. Mild minerals. Finishes semi dry with a whisper of bubblegum. Aftertaste is of malty milk and a trace of marmite. Hangs together quite well.

Bottle. Pours with a very viscous looking texture yielding a lightly hazed deep amber hued body with a small, off-white head. Aromas are quite sweet, nearly cloying. Some caramelized notes, very light banana (odd ester in a lager), vanilla, caramel, mild fruit, light chocolate, and cough syrup. Low spicy notes, mild hop character. Flavors are malty, quite sweet, maple, some esters (again odd for a dopplebock), a bit too caramel like in its malt presence, very sweet. Light raisin quality, caramel, vanilla, light melanoidin, low spice. Syrupy mouthfeel, low carbonation with a very full body. Overall too sweet, big and syrupy.

Bomber bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. This beer is kind of stinky. The birch syrup is there (whatever that smells like--I imagine it’s similar to maple syrup? Coz that’s what I’m smelling), along with what smells like cinnamon bread (possibly the birch syrup again), booze. Smells astringent. Pours hazy orange with a medium collapsing beige head; it falls into a skiff and collar of foam after a few minutes. The taste is thankfully an improvement over the aroma. It’s sweet and meaty with faint bitterness in the finish. Carbonation is pretty soft and it has a creamy mouthfeel. It’s alright once you get past the aroma. Re-examine: this beer gets a lot better after it warms up. The astringency in the aroma fades quite a bit, leaving a decent--if still slightly astringent--smelling beer. The harshness subsides and it becomes much more drinkable. Let it breathe. I originally had the aroma at a score of 4 and the overall at 14.

Sample at the Tap House Grill in Seattle. This beer pours a dark reddish-amber color with a medium light tan head that diminishes slowly to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of peaty malt and hops. Medium to full body with a slightly syrupy feel and flavors of sweet malt, woody hops and molasses. The finish is rich and sweet with a lingering malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Birch syrup? Have you ever had that on pancakes? WTF? Anyway this is rating a bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours brilliant clear darkish ruddy copper with a slight beige smear of bubbles. Aroma is sort of woodsy - or moth balls. Or moderate cola. Full bodied, a bit sticky. Flavor? Sweet. But malt? Hop? If my neighbors birch trees hadn’t died I’d go get a piece of bark to suck on for comparison. The flavor is not distressing, but it is so uncommon. Dare one say unique? One does. I’m not even sure this is woody. Well, ranting done, it’s actually enjoyable for an evening with a book. There is a moderately offsetting bitter in the finish - but it’s very far from dry.

22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy dark amber / brown with a small beige head. Aroma of maple syrup, lager yeast and bready malts. Flavour of syrup, caramel / bready malts and nuts. Full-bodied and well-balanced. Not too sweet. Very enjoyable.
