Duvel is a natural beer with a subtle bitterness, a refined flavour and a distinctive hop character. The unique brewing process, which takes about 90 days, guarantees a pure character, delicate effervescence and a pleasant sweet taste of alcohol. Apart from pure spring water, which is the main ingredient of beer, barley is the most important raw material. Barley must germinate for five days in the malt house, after which malt remains. The colour of the malt and as a consequence also of the beer is determined by the temperature. Duvel obtains its typical bitterness by adding various varieties of aromatic Slovenian and Czech hops. We use only exclusive hops that are renowned for their constant, outstanding quality. Duvel ferments for the first time in tanks at 20 to 26°C. The brewer uses his own culture for this. The original yeast strain, which Victor Moortgat himself selected in the 1920’s, originates from Scotland. After maturing in storage tanks in which the beer is cooled down to -2°C, the drink is ready for bottling. Thanks to the addition of extra sugars and yeast, the beer ferments again in the bottle. This occurs in warm cellars (24°C) and takes two weeks. Then the beer is moved to cold cellars, where it continues to mature and stabilise for a further six weeks. This extra long maturation period is unique and contributes to the refined flavour and pure taste of Duvel.

It looked great in the glass and had a fantastic aroma, but for me the carbonation was just too much! There was a good flavour lurking somewhere, but the intense gassiness to the beer dominated everything. I struggled to finish and this is not a beer that I need to repeat.

Duvel - the Belgian original. Unique bright yellow colour. Nice foamy white head. Lemon and cereal aroma. Bittersweet taste, but less bitter than a Chimay Blanche or La Trappe Tripel. Aftertaste not intense. Strong carbonation, which fits really well to this beer. Overall, very nice Tripel.

Bottled - pours gold with a white head. Sweet bready malty and fruity aroma and taste, citrus notes, sugar, yeasty, some spices into the close.

Bottle at the Cerise Bar, Reading. Gold with a large white head and an obvious fizz. Spicy and bready with hints of hay and orange. Light and fresh and dangerously easy to drink- certainly doesn’t taste its strength. It’s pleasant but it fails to wow- the whole thing is just a little on the light side- an odd thing to say for something of this strength. And therein lies the problem- if it was 4-5% and tasted like this it might make a decent session beer. But at 8% you want something you can sip and savour- and it hasn’t really got the depth or breadth of flavours for that. So overall yes it’s pleasant and easy-to-drink, but I don’t see the point in an 8% quaffing ale!

Pours clear and heavy sparkling yellow with a huge, lasting, frothy white head. The aroma contains herbs, spices, some fruits, yeast, alcohol and hops. It tastes light to medium sweet and medium to heavy bitter. The finish is long, dry and spicy. Fizzy carbonation, full-bodied, alcoholic. A classic, definitely, but a bit overrated to me.
