0.33 l bottle from ’Dranken Geers’. Clear, dark reddish amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, off-white layer. Sweetish, slightly sourish, moderately spicy and slightly fruity aroma of caramel, lots of coconut, vanilla, coriander, some lemon and oak. Quite sweet, slightly sourish, malty, slightly fruity and a bit spicy taste of caramel, coriander, coconut, vanilla, oak and a touch of lemon, followed by a long, moderately tart, woody-dry, minimally salty and rather boozy finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily, a bit astringent and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Again a very interesting version of the Goseator, quite complex and intense. A bit rough and unrefinded unfortunately, wouldn’t want to drink this on a daily basis, but it’s definitely worth a try. At least I like it better than the Double Wood variant.

From 33cl bottle. Pours brown (uninteresting) with no foam. Aroma is close to a barley wine: red fruits, malt, hazelnut.. The effect of the rum ageing is evident as well. Body is surprisingly light for a beer of 9.5 degrees, with good carbonation. A bit of astringency, some nice stickiness on the final. Taste has marked sweetness, but also some bitterness emerging later, as well as some sourness. Finish is looong and partially sweet. A masterpiece of a beer!

Bottle. Cloudy, light grey Amber, low bead. Sea water, rum barrel, phenolic. Sour, salty, way too boozy, scrubbed the deck wooden, medium light dry body, not my thing.

Hazy amber/ruby with almost no head. Aroma is lots of smoke, lots of nuts, some chalk, which is not bad. Taste is alcoholic, spicy sweetness, with more sourness and even more bitterness. Flour mouthfeel really phenolic and heavy. There are some red berries as well. Earthy. Too much of everything for me.

Bottle. Murky orange color with tan ring. Aroma is vanilla, sugar beet, salty gose remeniscing, boozy/phenolic. Taste is salty, rum/vanilla, more sugar beet, salty finish, boozy. Low carbonation. "Pirate beer" - awesome stuff, although not balanced.

Bottle. Copper red color, no head. Aroma of soft ripe fruit, vanilla, coriander and booze. Taste is quite diverse, with vanilla, ripe fruit, mild saltyness, red fruit, booze and some malt. Really strange, but nice.

Thank you tderoeck for picking up this bottle. 330 ml. bottle. Hazy orange, amber, basically no head. Nose is light nail polish with red apple vinegar, big blackcurrant & sour cherry, puckering, massive rich fruit & big plum, sour & sweet vinegar. Insane fruit with Coca-Cola & rum, low varnish, fascinating brew. Taste is sweet & sour candy, plum, blackcurrant, sweet & sour rum, Coca-Cola, red apple vinegar, faint varnish, big fruit. Taste is sweet candy, plum, Coca-Cola, varnish, faintly lactic. Wow this is intense & unique sweet & sour brew. The plum, Coca-Cola, varnish, red apple vinegar,… Very unique, slightly challenging, I am fascinated. Intense & weird bro!

Bottle @ LIBF’16. Shared with the RB Belgian team.

At LIBF. Several German breweries, including this one and Freigeist, are experimenting with German traditions in combination with international craft beer culture, and this is a good example: a hybrid of Gose and Doppelbock aged on rum barrels... Egg-white, loose head, pretty deep amber robe. Aroma of white rum (even ’baco’ - a cocktail of rum and cola), coriander, caramel, lemon, wood and strong varnish-like solvents. Soft sourish onset with sweetish edge and a candied orange-like aspect, yoghurty tartness with very soft and subtle salty accent, smooth caramelly malt body as in indeed a (helles) Doppelbock, some coriander and, expectedly, a woody finish with lots and lots of rum in both flavor and alcohol. I hate rum and rum barrel aged beers just don’t do it for me, but I have to admit this is a very interesting brew keeping me interested in the other variations.
