Bottle. A solid stout through and through. Pours a pitch-dark brown with a light, creamy beige head. Nose holds some hearty dark chocolate, maybe some sweet raisin, and notes of burnt malts. Flavor is sweet up front, then a little boozy, then dries out towards the end with some nice, roasty tones and bitterness. Finish is sweet, a little sticky, and good bit smokey. Pretty well-bodied with strong carbonation, there is definitely a crispness to this brew. Very nice.

From a 375ml bottle on 18/3/2010. Another winner from the South Aussie icon. Aroma is roasted malt, burnt toffee and a little bit of caramel. Very flavoursome with a smoky, dark chocolate taste predominating. Has an excellent sweet bitter balance.

[375ml bottle at the Bootleggers, High Wycombe] Deep brown-black with a moderate beige head. Sweet coffee & candy aroma. On tasting there’s a slight fizz which I thought would be annoying but which fortunately soon fades into a mouthfeel which is oily, and yet works surprisingly well. It tastes initially of coffee, then lots of earth with a hint of cough mixture before a beautiful and lasting smokiness takes over. Definitely a beer for sipping rather than gulping - but so good that I found myself sipping it at a dangerously intoxicating rate. For some reason I didn’t have high expectations of this, but it turned out to be very good indeed.

(bottle, 37.5cl) Black coloured hue with a brown medium-sized foamy head. Mildly sweet roast-malty aroma with notes of chocolate, candy, liquorice and leather. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, full bodied with a smooth and slightly oily mouthfeel. Roasty malty and subtle fruity taste with notes of chocolate, liquorice, mocha and a tinge of molasses; sweet and mildly roast-bitter finish with a moderate duration. 375ml bottle, turned. Pretty fresh - best after date is September 09. Opaque black. Big beige head that fades fairly fast. Aroma has roast malt and barley, vanilla, coffee, cocoa, liquorice, prunes and alcohol. There’s lots of coffee and bitter chocolate flavour. Some burnt notes. Lasting bitter, acid finish. I remember when this was one of a very few decent Australian brews - it still more than holds its own. Pretty consistent beer, just finding that roasted barley element a little bit much now.

Flaske 0,355l kjøpt på Systembolaget i Kiruna. Svart som natta med et brunfarget skum - som la seg litt for fort. Sterk aroma av kaffe og røstet malt. Litt fruktig. Smaken er avrundet og innholdsrik: Sjokolade, kaffe og røstet malt. Litt metallisk forstyrrelse i smaksbildet. Tørr bitter avslutning. God.
