Keg at Arendsnest, 21st October 13. Good black IPA, citrus on the nose and really many characterised of a light beer, the drink looks elegant. Taste is citrus hops, well blended with toasted malts, good example, and very enjoyable

Bouteille 33cl @ HopDuvel, bb 07/08/2013.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. ABV 8.4%. Almost black colour, soapy beige head. Aroma of liquorice, quite sweet, tobacco, lakrids, salmiak, some laurel, hops. Flavour of sweet lakrids, salty liquorice, grapefruit and pine hops, quite mellow though, light earthy, sticky but also bitter hoppy finish. Medium-bodied, almost no carbonation. Nice.

Very dark brown to black beer, aery beige irregular head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, citrus, caramel, bit sugary, mocha. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel, pretty sweet, fruity, bit sugary, roasted malts, citric sour touch, bitter hops. Aftertaste: pretty sour again, alcohol is noticeable, citrus, coffee and caramel, fruity hops, red fruit candy. Lovely beer!

Small cream-tan head over red-shot black beer. Fruity (grapes, exotic fruit) USA hops, very aromatic, resiny and roasted-burnt malts. Bitter-resiny flavour from the hops, dry grains (I guess the rye malt plays a big role flavourwise). Bit earthy notes as well, black cardamom. Medium bodied all the same - again the rye giving a slick impression. Medium carbonation. Nice, one of the better examples, if a tad severe.

Draught @ De Molen. Opaque pitch black color, full sized dense, thick brown head that leaves perfect lacing and lasts forever. Head looks like chocolate pudding, amazing. Wow, maximum points for presentation. Only malts and hops come through the thick head. Taste malts, nicely bitter, moderately roasty, only lightly hops. Imo the hop flavor as well as the roasted malts aren’t dominating enough. For me that’s what a black IPA is all about: combining the roastyness of an Imperial Stout with the hoppyness (fruity and bitter!) Of an (Imperial/Double) IPA. So a nice beer for sure, but not a great Black IPA imo.

Cock Tavern. Keg. 8.4% Almost opaque dark brown beer, little pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth with a little fine carbonation. Smooth dark malt with a little cream. No roast or bitterness. Floral candy sweet flavours with equal amounts of violets and strawberries. Just a whisper of citrus then the malt turns slightly bitter and do the hops. Finishes smooth and semi dry. Medium bitter linger with candy fruits and hop spicein the aftertaste. Really well joined up and interesting beer, Not sure I would have placed it as a Black IPA, comes over like a Black Saison. Hugely drinkable
