Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle. OK grassy and caramelly aroma. Cloudy copper colour with lots of floating bits. Big stable creamy white head. The flavour is quite bitter, with some malt. Also caramelly, but not as much as the aroma. Good beer, albeit a bit one-dimensional.

This IPA poured a golden yellow colour with a bright white foamy head. To the nose there are scents of very sharp hopps, citrus, yeast and grass. First taste was very lemony with flavours of light cough drops and pine. The finish is bitter with the palate continuing with the bitterness foe quite a while. A hopp heads delight.

12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville, best by Jan-Feb 2009. Hazy orange color with floaties. 2-finger head dissipates quickly but leaves nice lacing. Very malty aroma with a slight citrus hop twinge. Taste is much more bitter, but still very smooth and with a nice maltiness to balance it out. Resin, citrus and pine notes. Full bodied.

Another flavoursome, hopped American beer shared with Geir at GBBF 08. Slight hazy, amber body under a froth, white head. Sappy fruits to the nose. Hoppy flavoured with pine and grapefruits on a caramel backbone. Nice, dry bitterness in the mouth (06.08.2008).

Golden amber with light haze. Crisp hops, grass, light orange, and some malt in the aroma. Very grassy/pine/herbal hops in the flavor. Some lemon and orange as well. Very tasty. Medium bodied. Quality IPA with strong herbal notes.

Courtesy of GMCC2181. 12oz bottle pours deep gold with copper hues and thin white head. The aroma is grapefruit juice, a bit of spice and floral hops to go along with an under current of sweet malts. The taste is up front grapefruit hop flavor and orange peel then quickly moving into solid grapefruit hop bitterness. The malts are only just noticeable from time to time. It ends with no nonsense grapefruit hop bitterness hanging on deep into the after taste.

Cask at GBBF 2008 Wonderful peachy/apricot aroma. The taste was less punishing on the tastebuds than I was expecting with lovely refreshing flavourscoming through from th American hops. The bitterness hung around for a while, there was some pithiness at the rear of the mouth, most enjoyable.

Cask (GBBF 2008) - Golden/amber in colour. Fresh and hoppy aroma with tangy grapefruit. Slightly watery taste. Very bitter at first with hops and grapefruit and then some biscuity malt with bitterness again featuring strongly in the finish. Not bad but the bitterness is by far the strongest feature of this beer and could do with being stronger in other areas too.
