Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Draught, at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn on 22nd July 2009. Gold with white head that lasts some time and gives a fair amount of lacing. Intensely hoppy with huge flavour burst some may find an acquired taste. Herby hops balanced by some floral fruit then deliver a sharp, bitter aftertaste on a zingy mouthfeel. Exquisite, and nice to be re-acquiainted after three years! Even better to have reached the 100 club with this rating!! ** Also enjoyed at Rattle & Hum, under Smuttynose Finest Kind IPA, scoring 8-4-7-4-18. RE-RATING: 6 JULY 2013 on tap at Mugs Alehouse in Brooklyn. Gold with off-white ring-and-film, part lacing. Hoppy, yeasty aroma with dairy notes. Intensely hoppy liquid with grass and grapefruit. Bittersweet finish with the bitterness building. Light carb, fairly smooth this time yet engaging and bodiful. Great to familiarise myself with it once more in my favourite Brooklyn bar.

Overall Impression: A really nice brew, I always enjoy Smutty's IPA. They do a nice job of hitting on the best parts of the style, and making a really nice IPA.

Bottle. Pours a coppery amber with a medium-sized head and weak aromas... seriously not much going on in the nose. Flavor is a decent enough mix of grapefruit and caramel malt, but lacks a little oomph. Seems unidirectional and not very complex.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy orange settled almost golden with light off white head. Aroma is citrus and hoppy. Taste is citrus and hops, but not overpowering for an IPA.

Re-rate 9/13: Bottle sample at a tasting at Rotem’s place. Thanks zvikar. As Smuttynose Finestkind IPA. Slightly hazy deep golden with a white head. Aroma of very stale hops. Flavor with light malty notes, stale hops with faint citric hints and a nice bitter finish. Medium-bodied. Too old. Score is not calculated. 4/3/6/3/11=2.7

Bottle thanks to someone at the Bruery tasting. Pours with a small off-white head and a golden body. Aroma of tangerine hops, malt and a bit of skunk. Taste is a bit light struck with faded hops and some weak malts. Fizzy and watery.

12 oz bottle courtesy of eaglefan538. Best before Feb 09 stamped on the bottle. Pour is hazed golden orange with a nice one inch off white head. There are a few carbonation bubbles rising slowly to the top. Some lacing after the head settles. Aroma of hops - resin, pine, some citrus peel and ripe pear fruit sweetness. There is malt present as well, grainy and also resinous. Taste is mostly the bitter citrus peel hoppiness initially, though the earthy grainy maly is present in the body, which is medium. The bitterness trails through the beer, and lingers a bit too long in a somewhat sour bitter finish. Overall, a nice, unique IPA - would love to try this fresh on draft, as I imagine that is the way to drink this beer. Thanks for sending this my way, Brian.
