20th September 2014
Tasting at Paul and Lorna’s flat. Deepest Croydonia. Thanks to Leighton. Very hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and a little crisp. Light minerals and floralness. Mild seltzer, orange and spices. Light dry finish. Fine but muted by Maine standards.

Bottle at the pre-Zwanze tasting in Croydonia, thanks to L-puppy, 20/09/1 Hazed orange with a moderate off white covering that retains well. Nose is orange squash, citric peel, spice, apricot. Taste comprises tangy citric rinds, tangerine, light bread tones, spice, damp straw, lemon rind. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough saison but expected a little more from one of my favourite breweries.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours hazy golden with a small off-white head. The nose is doughy, spicy, brioche, candied peel and lemon. The taste is soft, crisp, bitter, spicy, doughy, light alcohol, lemon peel and straw with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Rather drinkable stuff. Easy going.

Bottle shared pre Zwanze 2014 - picked up in America. Pours hazy gold with a frothy white head. The aroma has a bit of dry dough, pale grains, hay, yeast, faint citrus. Light to medium sweet flavor with a bit of lemon rind, pale bread, more grains, tangerine. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Nice balance on the finish, some tangy lemon, a bit of grainy bread, light dough, hay, light jammy citrus. Not bad.

Bottled 7/16/13 drunk on 2/26/14
Perfect pour; bright goldenrod with a large white head that recedes slowly with spotty lacing. Clarity is very high, the sediment having fully dropped out.
Remnants of a rather high hoppiness are still hanging around; floral and even some herbal notes mixing with the Belgian yeast esters provide a soft but deep fruitiness (peaches, apricots, apples). The honey and light bread notes from the maltiness are very well-integrated with the hops and yeast at this point and no alcohol or flaws are noted. Medium to medium-high strength of aroma with just a touch of hop acid on the finish.
Dry and spicy in the mouth, this certainly reminds me of a saison, yet the hops are succulently bitter still, and obviously American-flavored, giving lightly citrus, lots of spiciness and a slight edge of bitter pine. It’s all perfectly layered across lightly sweet, but well-attenuated pale malts and the bottle conditioned, unfiltered mouthfeel is soft and supple.
Really nice beer, and despite the brewery’s "Drink within 90 days of bottling", I’ve got to imagine that if you’re not a huge hophead, this is certainly better for the 220 days of aging this bottle has had. The Belgian yeast has come out nicely, providing reserved esters and very light phenols and the hop acids are still there, yet in balance (where I don’t see it being terribly balanced fresh). The rye is nice and chewy in texture and adds a bit of spiciness and more malt depth.
Probably my favorite from these guys so far, though I wonder if I’d be saying that if I drank this fresh? Maybe I should start giving their other beers more time to age before drinking because many of them are just too acidic fresh.
