Inspired by London’s Industrial Revolution when Smog filled the air and the Porter was the beer of the people. An original home brew recipe using 9 different malts including a good chunk of smoked ‘Rauchmaltz’ from Bamberg, Germany. Big flavour hits of molasses, raisins and caramel are cut with the resinous US hop Chinook. Smokey aromas fly, reminiscent of the smoke stacks of industrial London.

Smoked porter with yellowish white, opening head and very dark, near black colour. Very smoked aroma: smoked herring, smoked bacon; also accents of figs, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, plums. Very smoky taste, like smoked meat, spicy liquorice accent, dried fruits, smooth mouthfeel, roasted bitterness in the finish. I have nothing against roasted bitterness nor against smoked beers, but the combination of the two is a taste I apparently haven’t quite acquired yet. Interesting, though.

Small greyish-yellow head over black beer. Sweetish, brown sugar, wood, charcoal and - something buttery or coffeemilk. Sweet-bitterish, woody, bit severe but seriously empty... Bit smoked, indeed. Quite watery, finish as cold mocha. Maybe it is historical, but I harboured higher hopes for this one.

From can. Black. Persistent beige head and lacing. Wonderful aroma and taste of smoked malt, coffee, dark chocolate and a tiny touch of smoke. Superb aftertaste, balanced with very moderate bitterness.

Bottle @ RBBSG, 2014. From Deliciouslydifferent. Dark brown/black colour, some beige foam. Aroma of roasted malts with smoky notes and some chocolate. Very well balanced. Low alcohol but full of taste. Very good!

Bouteille 33cl @ RBBSG III, courtesy of Jef.
