Inspired by London’s Industrial Revolution when Smog filled the air and the Porter was the beer of the people. An original home brew recipe using 9 different malts including a good chunk of smoked ‘Rauchmaltz’ from Bamberg, Germany. Big flavour hits of molasses, raisins and caramel are cut with the resinous US hop Chinook. Smokey aromas fly, reminiscent of the smoke stacks of industrial London.

330 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBSG III. Thanks to JefVerstraete! Dark brown & huge tanned head. Smell is very intense mocha, milk chocolate mixed with a big amount of smoke (quite DE-like), even faint lacto. Taste is mix of chocolate ice-cream, lots of smoke, milk chocolate, mocha, light roast, touch bitter, lingering sweetness. Substantial body, very nice stuff.

Bottle at Den Gode Nabo. A very dark brown beer with a finger thick beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, bonfire notes and some coffee grit and cocoa. A bit thin on the palate, with a soft carbonation level. Dry. Coffee grit, dark chocolate notes and some roasted, lightly smoked malts. Lasting roasted finish. Not superb in any way, still a solid beer. 140620

330 ml bottle, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 5.4%. Black colour, low beige head. Aroma of chocolate, bonfires and smoked meat - a weird combination. Easy drinking, smooth mouthfeel. The smoke is there, but does not dominate. Chocolate malt and some fruity tones, moderate hops. Nice enough.

33cl bottle from Cork & Cask. Appearance - opaque black/brown with a thin cream head. Nose - charcoal, dark chocolate. Taste - more charcoal, perhaps tar and dark chocolate again. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh and balanced finish. Overall - satisfying if a bit light. It grows on you though!

(Draught at Euston Tap, Euston, London, 9 Apr 2014) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with dark fruit, prunes, chocolate and a touch of smoke. Malty, fruity taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, a balanced smoke taste and a generous roasted bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Fairly fruity porter, with a light smoke character. Nice one.
