This special bottling of Innis&Gunn has been matured in rare oak barrels from a famous distillery in Ireland. These barrels had been used to mature one of the great triple distilled Irish whiskeys. The result of this unique maturation is a big, full flavoured, complex beer with a delightful warming finish.

Bottle from the LCBO. Very dark mahogany pour with a small quickly fading tan head. Nose is quite light due to very soft carbonation (just this bottle maybe?) but has notes of toffee, wood, chocolate, smoke, vanilla and some berries. Quite sweet with toffee and honey contributing and some chocolate and coffee bitterness taking a bit of the edge off and lingering in the finish. Mouth is medium oily but quite flat. Nice flavour but carbonation is lacking. 6/3/6+/3-/13

Keg at the beer kitchen... Dark black... Thick tan head... Over cold even in hand... Soft dry dusty chocolate roast malts nose... Dark roast... Soft chocolate malt nose... Sweet chocolate roast.. Dark malts.. Big chocolate roast... Big blackcurrant.. Soft sweet chocolate roast.. Ok but a little too sweet and not worth £8 a pint

Bottle. Dark brown/black sporting a lovely beige head. Aroma of espresso and vanilla. Taste of roasted malts, chocolate, espresso, vanilla, wood and whiskey. More Bourbon-ish than Irish I think. Moderate to strong bitterness. Medium carbonation. I‘m not the world‘s biggest admirer of cask-aged beers but this one manages to find the right balance.

330ml clear bottle. Pours an opaque, dark brown, almost black with a reddish hue and a small, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate, caramel, whiskey and oak. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice, caramel, coffee and oak, leading to a dry, whiskey finish. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture and soft to flat carbonation. Ok.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with an enormous fluffy brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was malty, woody, toasty and had notes of whiskey and gingerbread. The flavor was whiskey, wood, caramel, raisin, bread and had a moderate underlying bitterness. Long malty whiskey finish. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.

Bottle at Counting House. It pours cloudy near black with a thick light tan head. The nose is bitter -sweet, decent roast, light smoke, wood, treacle, honeycomb, light vanilla, toasted coconut and nougat. The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, sweet roast, cocoa, nougat, honeycomb, bounty bar, spicy whisky and alcohol boost with a sticky - sweet finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Probably one of their better beers, but too sweet for me!

Bottle from Tesco, Prestwich. Black, no head. Has an interesting sweetened nose with a very light whisky influence, some soapiness, but appealing. Has a similar taste akin to the dandelion and burdock pop drink. Certainly mild for a stout.

Review sample, label names it "Irish Whiskey Aged." Pours black, with very little fizz. Smell is warm and treacly, like a bit of whiskey and sugar stirred in hot water to relieve a cold. I am somewhat used to I&G’s house style by now: a lot of flavor from whatever was in the barrel, but not strong in alcohol. We’re talking "Bourbon and branch" here. And for a stout, the thread of whiskey keeps it very smooth. Sometimes it carries the impression of being Imperial strength, but that’s all in the taste buds.

Very nearly, just, but not quite opaque that’s a very dark mahogany, with a little tan head that reduces to a ring in moments. The nose is whiskey with a little booze and mild roasted malts. The taste is similar to the nose - whiskey and vanilla. The roasted malt is surprisingly sweeter than I expected. The oak is firmly there. Not a challenging beer, but a tasty one.
