Adnams’ interpretation of an American IPA, made with wheat and pale ale malts alongside hops from England, Slovenia and America (specifically Boadicea, Columbus and Stryian Goldings). It was created under the instruction of company chairman Jonathan Adnams, who simply requested, ‘Brew something to wow me’. It was originally intended as a limited edition release to commemorate the opening of Adnams’ new brewhouse and distribution centre, and now forms part of the core range.

Drunk as M&S Winter IPA at home. Very, very good flavours and my standout winter special from M&S. A true English IPA. Malt, hops, great mouthfeel and a bitter flavour that lingers. It went particularly well with a Chinese takeaway.

Bottle as the M&S Southwold Winter IPA. Poured cloudy dull amber colour with a short lasting off-white head. Aroma of biscuit, tropical fruit, and hop. Medium sweetness, medium bitterness, touch of tropical fruit sourness. Medium body, sticky texture, carbonation is soft. Has a light spiced finish. Certainly not an attractive brew, but very moreish.

From M and S as Southwold Winter IPA. Appearance - cloudy amber with a nicely proportioned head. Nose - biscuits, light sweet spice, dried oranges and raisins. Taste - more sweet spice and dried fruit. Like hot cross buns. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry balanced finish. Overall - lovely ale, falls into old ale as well as ipa.

Bottle at home, 31/12/15, as M and S Southwold Winter IPA. Clear golden orange with a decent off white covering. Nose is orange sherbet, tangerine, light floral notes, toasted malt. Taste comprises bitter orange, tangerine, light spice, citric tinged straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close peppered with juicy hop bitterness. Ok.

330ml bottle. Golden amber colour with a small white head. Very citrusy (grapefruit) hoppy aroma. Flavour is also dominated by the grapefruity hoppiness, there’s a light citric bitterness but it’s also a little sweet, nice balance there, also a hint of malt. For 6.7% ABV the alcohol is well hidden. Nice IPA.

Takie sobie piwo.
