Roast barley and chocolate and crystal malts combine to give the ale a deep deep ruby colour and sweet mocha and toast flavour. A little oats in the mash help to provide a smoothness and late Fuggles hops create a resinous balance. It ferments out fairly dry and the end result is a sturdy, powerful and smooth ale not to be rushed at.

13/06/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (cask). Corpo medio, consistenza oleosa, carbonazione soft. Porter mediocre.

(Cask at Oliver Twist, 20111116) The beer poured almost black and clear. Its head was small, long lasting and white. Aroma had roasted malts and coffee. Palate was quite full bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, liquorice, saltiness and low bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. Good porter - especially I liked the lack of burnt flavour.

Bottle: Unclear, deep amber coloured, small and stable off-white foamy layer, sourish-fruity nose, leathery-toasty aromas underneath; medium bodied, moderate bitter-sweet flavour, not overly dry, quite smooth; slightly lingering malty-toasty and fruity finish, accompanied by a light acidity. Quite well rounded, pleasant Porter........
