0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, 2015 version. Clear, amber with a thin, frothy, almost stable, tan head. Sweetish-spicy aroma of coriander, orange jam, honey and toffee. Sweet, spicy taste of coriander, orange jam, toffee, licorice, some clove and honey, followed by a medium long, slightly warming, light bitter and spicy finish. Medium to full body, creamy to oily mouthfeel, soft to average carbonation. Lots of coriander in here, even more so in the aroma which is simply too much. The taste is a bit more balanced and rescues it, but this is not going to be one of my favourites. Still decent though.

Clear orange beer, aery irregular off-white head, unstable, falls down quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, bit oxidized, raisins, some caramel. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet and malty start, raisins, caramel, lots of orange peel, bit spicy. Aftertaste: oxidized, spicy, orange peel, hint of coriander, pretty sweet.

33cl from the liquor store - 2015 version. Ruby-brown pour with a tan head that gives way to a thin lacing. Smells like caramel, dark fruit, cherries, coriander. Tastes bitter - a kind of English ale bitter - but is nicely balanced by the caramel, cherry and spices. Medium to full bodied, smooth mouthfeel.

Appearance: Hazy golden color. Medium, white head.
Taste: Medium sweet, spicy.
Palate: Medium body. Sticky texture. Spicy finish.
Overall: Nice belgian.

Bottle at home, pours hazy dark amber with white head. Sweet malts, damp cellar, IJ yeast, sugar, marzipan, raisins, dry autumn leaves. Yeastiness overrules all flavor (dough and spring onions). Sweet, bitter. Body is medium, finish is very dry, dusty. Carbo is over medium.

"Het originele Amsterdams feestbier", New Year’s ale from ’t IJ, and somehow I knew this was going to gush, yet my precautions could not prevent it from flooding part of the table. Very thick and frothy, lacing, very pale beige, creamy head (not just establishing itself in my tasting glass, but creeping up from the bottle too). Colour is a deep, cloudy, orangey bronze. Aroma is in concordance with the gushing: fruity esters jumping out of the glass, impressions of overripe peach and banana, a (fortunately very weak) hint of rotting egg (H2S), but also many redeeming odours of candi sugar, caramel candy, wet hay, brown bread, port wine, orange zest, coriander seed, kahlua, baker’s yeast, biscuit, tons of honey, weeds, apple cake, some solvents (varnish). Taste starts with a vivid, sweet fruitiness (lots of raisins, pineapple, red apple, brambleberries, banana), lots of residual candi sugar, a bit cloying, with a soft, full, smooth and fluffy mouthfeel, sourish accent with relieving rather than dull effect, medium carbonation, caramelly and very slightly nutty malt backbone, tons of spicy yeastiness, starchy and very bready and slightly drying ’real’ spiciness (I suspect coriander seed); finishes in a full and rich caramelly malt sweetness paired with gentle, herbal hop bitterishness, a ton of yeastiness and some warming, liqueurish alcohol. In all: not bad at all, a rich and interesting ’massieve’ ale indeed, just too bad for the gushing.

Light brown in colour. Aroma and flavour have a hint of spice and some candied peel. Slightly sticky and sweet.
