Cask@GBBF2011. Deep amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is wood, caramel, some fruits and mild wooden notes. Flavour is quite much the same with some nutty and malty notes.

Churchkey, DC cask ($8): Pours a copper color with a nice white head. Aroma is not very powerful, but with enough effort you can just make out the fruity notes. I thought that the taste was an improvement on the smell though. Somewhat bitter and finishing with a pleasant bready taste at the end. Obviously, this is easy drinking, but, as others have said, this beer lacks any real complexity.

On tap, pours clear amber. Strange aroma that is sort of reminiscent of dry caramel malts, English hops and a flatulent-like quality. Flavour is much better than the nose with light dried fruits and dry caramel malts - smooth, creamy palate. Decent.

@ Royal Oak, Widcombe. Dark golden-amber. Caramelly-toasty aroma with light yeast fruitiness, but also hints of pedio. Toasty character, with light, fruity tartness.

Cask at GBBF 2009. Yep, another one of those obvious British beers, I’ve not rated. Deep brown colour, lasting cream head. Distinctive Wadworth yeast aroma. Yeast carries on throughout. Some toffee. Faint hop on finish. Great condition and mostly about the yeast character in this bitter.

[On draught at Sweeney & Todd’s, Reading] This was ubiquitous in Wiltshire when I was growing up, and at the time I didn’t like it. I’ve avoided it for years, and was going to avoid it tonight as well. However, my first choice (Adnams The Bitter) turned out to have gone off, and so I thought I’d give the 6X another chance. And Wadworth’s rewarded me well - It’s sweet, malty, smooth, treacle, some raisin flavour, a hint of smoke; all in all, a beautiful pint. I can’t believe I avoided it all those years! [Re-rate, 31/1/2009 at Wadworth’s brewery] My previous notes stand, with added straw flavour. One of my favourite British bitters, very enjoyable indeed.
