Dark in colour but not in flavour, bright hop character with plenty of citrus and lightly tropical pallet combined with delicious bitterness backed with hints of coffee and chocolate.

330ml can. Jet black appearance with a one-two finger tan head. Aroma: citrus hops, grapefruit, malt, pine, some roasty/coffee notes. Taste: exactly as the aroma. Really silky smooth palate, bitter finish. Fantastic beer, love the fact it’s session strength as well.

Can from SIPS at PP. Light black pour with foamy head. Aroma and taste are impressively big for a lighter beer. Not bad but maybe had too high expectations.

At Billie’s Bierkafetaria. It was just a matter of time before some or other ’new school’ craft brewery would come up with a black session IPA I suppose, and this is the first one I encountered. Very thick and frothy, lacing, moussy, pale greyish beige head, blackish colour but still translucent under bright light, ruby hue. Dank IPA aroma of mouldy grapefruit, hemp, tangerine, black pepper, wormwood, charcoal, walnut, haemoglobin, bayleaf. Soft onset dominated by dried seaweed- and cured meat-like umami flavors with a touch of dried fig sweetishness and underlying basic sourishness; fairly sharpish carbo, very nutty and toasted malt bittersweetness, becoming coffeeish roasted bitter in the end but then halted by a lively, aromatic hop bouquet, bittering, spicy and dried citrus peel-like, long and fragrant, a bit earthy. I like BIPAs and this one is packed with flavor, certainly for a beer at ’session’ strength.

330 ml can from Ales by Mail at 4.5% ABV.
Dark brown body, with a big, creamy, lacing, beige head.
Aroma of citrus, orange, earth, grass, dark chocolate, some coffee.
Taste is quite light bodied, with coffee, earth, citrus, orange, grass, cocoa, wood, some resin.
Light, slick mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes roasty, bitter, dry, with coffee, cocoa, citrus, resin, wood.

Very nice, especially for the ABV. Very hoppy, with enough roastiness and sweetness for a good balance. Light bodied and easy, but fully aromatic. Black Session IPA? Great idea and very well realised.

Can, 4.5%. Almost black with thin lacy head. Aroma of strong piney hops and dark malts. Flavour is also very hop forward. The aftertaste offers some treacle-like bittersweetness.
