This historical “mumme” beer style has been brought back to life for Beau’s Oktoberfest! A medieval-era ale with a bouquet of botanicals including red clover blossom, mugwort, dandelion root, black tea, applewood, this beer is spice-forward with balancing residual malt sweetness.

A murky mahogany body topped by a dense off white head. The nose is very appealing with elements of cinnamon, caramel and fruity hops. One of the most appealing of the Beau’s \"ancient recipe\" beers. Spices lead the taste parade with cloves, cinnamon and pumpkin notes up front. There is a slight metallic edge or a hint of menthol underneath and the 35 IBUs poke their heads out in the form of citrus and floral accents. It is all well supported by a strong caramel malt backbone. Nice integration of somewhat unusual tastes.

Beautiful mahogany pour, with a medium beige head. Very malty, orange blossom, some light pepper, and spice with some musty bog grasses, and black tea. Heavy mouth feel, very soft carb. Finish has little bitterness, subtle sweetness and a savory slightly spicy kick, and a very pleasant black tea.

At the brewery last August. Based on an alt beer it is a mahogany brown with a tea and gingerbread aroma. Honey, gingerbread, cinnamon apples, spice and malts. Delicious.

600mL bottle, pours a hazy dark orange amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of roasted pumpkins, pumpkin puree and pumpkin spices. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of roasted pumpkin upfront, followed by pumpkin spices. Fairly moderate-bodied. Decent.

Bottle - Lots of spicy notes, much like a pumpkin beer. Clearish copper with a small beige head. Pumpkin spice, malty and a light bitterness.

Hazy amber-brown. Well, it doesn’t smell like mumme; it smells like pumpkin beer. A very spicy nose, and on the palate this has a fair bit of sugar, again a big blast of spice - not distinctive but maybe cinnamon, nutmeg. Not getting the caraway. A lot of bitterness, some malt sweetness. The balance isn’t so great. It certainly lacks the big rich grape nuts malt character of a true mumme, but still ok.

Bottle from LCBO in Oktoberfest taster. Very dark copper under a large short lived off white head. Nose is quite floral with some light honey and caramel and a subtle spice background with the marjoram and thyme more prominent than the cloves. Light sweet malt with a slightly more dominant spice through the middle and finish and light grassy hop bitterness. Mouth is medium and creamy with average carbonation and a lingering balanced dry spice. Interesting. 7+/3+/7-/4/14

Enjoyed at the Loon. Pours a hazy caramel-amber colour with a beige head, minimal retention and lacing. Spicy nose with nutmeg and cinnamon, reminding me of Halloween bakeries. The spices are well-blended in the taste with the herbs added, leaving a mild grassy dry finish. Light spices lingers and hints of bread. A nice smelling, pumpkinish brew, but with a nice smooth hoppy taste.
