When the autumn leaves begin to fall, then it’s time to savour Maneblusser Bok. This pale amber beer is brewed with 2 varieties of barley malt, wheat malt and oats. It is made with 3 types of hops and seasoned with curaçao. The result? A fine balance between bitter and sweet, with hints of ripe fruit. Just like autumn, it tastes mellow, full-bodied and heart-warming. Ideal after a brisk autumn walk!

Lichtbruin bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is licht bitterzoet, chokolade en caramel verder nog iets van friszuur fruit. Best goed, helaas ietwat waterig van structuur.

Sampled draft @ ’t Antwaerps Bierhuyske. The waitress really recommended against this one, citing it as being unbearably sweet – I don’t really see it, yes it is sweet but not unbearably so and this is Belgian after all + this one is a Bok on top. Odd to see this beer-style in Belgium – I wonder if this one isn’t meant for export? (Below I do see a fair amount of Belgian ratings). Brown amber, small tanned head. Nose is hugely metallic, caramel & herbs. Taste is metallic brown banana, sugar, candy, huge banana, caramel, honey, cereal, more brown banana. This one is not bad but both body & taste feel very disjointed. Decent though still.

"Taste the Indian summer in your glass" says the label of this beer, originally brewed for the Mechelen-based Beer Brothers, since 2003 (and at the beginning only from tap). Bock beers are a rarity in Belgian beer culture (contrary to the Netherlands) and the few ones that have been produced, were simply Belgian ales that have little to do with the ’real’ bock tradition in either the Netherlands or Germany. This one displays a thick, yellowish, nicely lacing, creamy head and a brownish bronze colour, dark but still transparent, yet cloudy after adding the ’fond’. Quite rich and sweet nose of cacao powder, candied dates, cloves, madera wine, banana, cinnamon, coffee liqueur, candi syrup, ginger, bayleaf; taste less sweet than expected based on the aroma, even a lightly sourish accent, dark fruits, smooth maltiness, a bit sticky, toasted coffeeish bitterness in the end with warming alcohol. The kinship with the famed Gouden Carolus Classic is obvious.

Good beer, as always with Het Anker. Body of a dark bock, but with all kinds of spices and herbs.

On tap in a 25 cl. glass @ Robert’s Pub, Veenendaal with Niek. Dark brown with a beige head. Roasted malts and caramel. Not as bitter as most good bocks but certainly not too sweet either. Slight Belgian yeast undertone. Good bock.

On tap @ Baviera (Medina del Campo). Dark brown colour with a creamy light beige head with medium lasting and good lacework. Aroma is chocolate, plumbcake and brown sugar. Flavor is sweet, notes of chocolate, toffee, raisins and ripe fruit. The final is slightly bittery with sweet notes, dense and creamy on palate.

Drought. Reddish amber color, large foamy beige head, doughy aroma, fizzy, slightly sour yeast taste, long finish. Not very special but still fine.

Draft @ Delirium Brussels.
