A sweet bitterness can be found in this powerful abbey beer. Grimbergen Optimo Bruno is made of high-quality raw materials and has a concentrated full-bodied taste and warm aftertaste. Brewed since 1988 and originally an Easter beer.

Pours dark amber/ruby with a large, lasting head.Nose shows chocolate, port-like notes, sultanas and brown sugar, along with a healthy dose of candi sugar.Similarly sweet flavours, although it quickly dries out. There’s lots more candi sugar and golden syrup along with more sultanas/dried fruit. A bit over the top. The alcohol is pretty noticeable too, almost harsh.Carbonation is way over the top, but at the same time it’s needed to cut through the sweetness.

Bottle. Spicy, lavender and pepper aroma. Brown amber, offwhite lace. Sugary base, light spice, a hint metallic, orangepeel finish. Lackluster. Medium body, mellow mouthfeel.

Bottle shared with Deanso. Clear brown pour with small off white head. Aroma of raisins, dark fruit and caramel. Flavour has same aspects with an overwhelming sweetness and a touch of alcohol in the finish.

Bottle. Clear brown with a coat of cream head that lasts OK. Aroma of dark sugars, hard spices, prunes, port. Taste is sweet with stewed fruits, fortified wine. Drying bitterness at the end with mild spices. Alcohol pretty well hidden. Lifeless mouthfeel, but it’s not particularly syrupy. A bit more carbonation might have helped. Nothing offensive about it, but surely a beer this strong shouldn’t be this dull.

Great dark brown color with a deep dark red glow shining through. Don’t like the smell but the taste is fine again. Full body, good carbo.

33cl bottle. Pours dark-amber with a hint of a red/orange hue when in front of light. The head is generous and a decent amount of lace stays throughout. The nose has stewed apples and perhaps raisins. The taste has more of the raisins and a hint of spice - nutmeg or cinnamon. The palate is big in structure and definitely very long and powerful. It cleans ok, but if I’m being picky (and surely that is the whole point of the exercise), there is too much of an alcohol burn on the end - the body hasn’t quite hidden it. The overall all impression is it’s a massive beer, if not quite a balanced one.
