Bottle. Dark reddish brown with a lovely pale beige head. Aroma of stewed plums, bananas, caramel, cloves. Quite light-bodied with a pleasing creaminess. Plummy sweetness with some caramel and bread before a dry finish that’s quite bitter with some spices. [3.5]Very decent beyond BB date. Wants to be fairly warm.

Bottle on the Eurostar back to London with Leighton and James. It pours deep brown and a thick beige head. The nose is very sweet - raisin, currant, fig, caramelised banana, melon, pear and wood. The taste is caramelised banana, currant, raisin, caramel and wood, with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not a bad dubbel, but a bit sweet.

Bottle shared with Paul and James on the train back from Brussels. Pours hazy, ruby-brown with a small, soft foam head. Some ripened dark fruits haunt the aroma, as does toasty sugar. Medium sweet flavor, ripe fruits, cherries, plums, a bit of bread, faint leafy bitterness. Medium bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Mild dry finish, some light dry fruits, mild yeast, dark candi sugar. Pretty classic and basic. Some definite warmth in the finish.

Bottle from Seijo Ishii in Kyoto. Aroma is malty and a bit fruity, with spice, light chocolate, orange, minerals. Ok but pedestrian. Orange-brown with a tall, rocky head. Sweet malty flavor, spicy, with orange and caramel. Light in body for a dubbel. Not really a dubbel, but a lighter abbey bruin. Well, it’s ok but nothing special is going on here. Rather lame.

Bottle at De Paas. Brown clear pour with small tan head. Aroma of raisins, toffee and alcohol. Flavour also has raisins along with plum and bread. Noticeable alcohol in the finish and high carbonation spoil the beer.

Colour is pretty light brown. Smells mostly like alcohol, nail polish remover and iron. Tastes a bit like iron and alcoholic too, mixed with some caramel. Slightly coffee-ish in the aftertaste. Easy mouthfeel.
