Bouteille. [notes 2005]

Draft - Milk chocolate and roast malts. Jet black with a creamy brown head. Milk chocolate with a bit of burnt malt and a sweet finish. Really nice milk stout.

Originally rated May 2005. This milk stout pours a dark brown with red highlights. The aroma is awesome with full chocolat and hints of caramel. The taste is mostly coffee, especially in the finish and aftertaste. There is slight molasse and some bitterness. Very smooth mouthfeel and quite creamy. I would say that the aroma is this brews best thing, but overall, a real pleasant creamy stout.

[Bottled at the brewpub] A pitch black beer with a small brown head. The aroma is slightly sour - I wonder if it is the added lactose, but also contains notes of chocolate, and hints of plastic and diacethyl. An aroma with some good and some bad impressions. The flavor is very roasted with an oily coffee impression - I find it somewhat like chewing coffee beans, but there is also notes of milk, though not enough to go the length to a cafe latte. The end is dry - which also compares good to a cup of coffee, while the mouthfeel is very smooth. Except for the somewhat confusing aroma I really like this.

late 04/early 05 bottle from Joanette consumed August 05. Pours a rich, caramel and chocolate mix (sort of like hot chocolate) of brown and black. Slick and lustrous with an initially large tan head that quickly recedes to one-finger high, moderate retention, and light bits of lacing. Smells sweet of chocolate an rich, sweet toffee. Buttercream, raisins, light currants and a touch of milky lactose. The flavor provides a bit of dry, grainy roast, and the texture is smooth and milky, yet has a slight powdery feel to it. Low filtration as always, from this brewery allows the beer to be smooth and milky, without really being too thin. The flavor of lightly burnt malts, touches of cofee and sweet, moist raisins get a bit tiresome, to my tastes, by the end, but it’s an interesting take on the style and quite flavorful. I have had some less than exciting bottles, but this bottle was quite nice, so I will just enter my review based on this one. Finishes sweet, milk-chocolatey and lightly vinous/fruity. Medium body. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve come to like some hops flavor in my sweet stouts, so the lack of that in this one wasnt very pleasing. A little bit too much carbonation, somewhat annoying on the palate, breaks up the mouthfeel.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark stout with a huge bubbly off white head with better then standard retention. Aroma of light chocolate is kind of weak. Taste has a very creamy texture with some chocolate also detectable. No hops are discernable which result in low mouthfeel points. Overall, this is quite enjoyable but not overpowering in any way which seems to be the fashion for stout these days.

Bottled. Extremely black. Sweet, candyish nose. Malty with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Mealy with notes of coffee. Rather discrete.

Prohibited in the US, huh? Damn French cows just can’t get a break. First their raw milk cheese gets the snub and now their milk stout. Black body with volumous light brown head. Slight milk chocolate and vietnamese coffee aroma. The milk and sugar theme continues in the moderate, smooth body with simple milk chocolate flavours. There’s a slight toffee note, maybe some almonds, but they don’t linger. On a to-style basis, this beer would have to score higher, because they’ve hit all the marks, but I’m still waiting for a true milk stout that shows me something besides the basics. There must be potential in the style for more than just smooth milk chocolate.

Deep dark beer with a nice moka head. Aroma of roasted malts, and chocolate. Very sweet in mouth (lactose?) with a lightly roasted aftertaste....like drinking a cold sweet coffee. Medium body.
