27 January 2019. At Goeste Festival, Ghent. Shared with Anke! Pours clear golden with a lasting, thin, unstable, frothy, white head; little lacing. Aroma of yellow apple, green banana, white pepper, hay, yeast, young cheese, straw, onion, breadcrust. Taste is light fruity sweet, notes of green banana & apple peel with a bready-yeasty touch; light to medium spicy bitter middle has pepper & grass, some iron, sourish wheat, lime almost. Dry, peppery hoppy finish, bit grassy, quite yeasty too, lingering unripe fruit. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation (numbing a bit!). Good quenching Saison, but carbonation impairs the taste a little.

330 ml. bottle sampled @ Bar Pardaf. Saison from a Belgian commissioner of whom I have never heard before encountering this beer. Pours golden with a nicely creamy white head. Smell is very grainy, strangely green, empty fizzy grain and almost vaguely metallic. Over carbonated grainy with weeds, unpleasant chemical bitterness and vaguely metallic. Simply put a poor over-carbonated empty Belgian blond marketed a saison, there are far too many of these kinds of beers out there and this one disappears in the vast crowd. Surprised to see that this was brewed at ‘t Verzet but given the quality of this beer I assume only their equipment was used and they were not involved in this otherwise.

Bottle. Pours clear pale blonde, big white head with good stability. Smell is hay, typical saison phenols, tad hopped ( spicy hops) . Taste is full, sharp, bitter, phenolic, tad astigent though ( which is a small detail fit for improvement ) Decently spiced by hops and phenols, all seems to be well balanced and without any flaws. Medium body, and medium high carbo ( as the style perscribes ). A very well exectuded example of a saison style. Ending is a bit dry, this could also be improved by a tad more dryness. Well done !

The first beer by a new, young beer company in Lochristi near Ghent, a saison executed at Verzet. Very thick, coarse but stable and regularly shaped, moussy, even foamy, cobweb-lacing head, remaining closed for a long time over a deep, warm, bright 'old gold' coloured beer with orangey hue, initially clear with vivid strings of sparkling, hazy with sediment. Aroma of dried orange peel, hay, wormwood leaves, bitter honey, dried apricots, lightly toasted bread crust, grass, white pepper, peach and initially a very faint skunkiness (mercaptans) which remains in the background and fades within seconds - so I will not consider this a flaw in reviewing this beer. Crisp, 'cleanly' fruity onset, some dried apple peel and unripe banana notes but restrained in sweetness, with 'stings' of hop bitterness becoming apparent at an early stage. Minerally, lively carbonation, standard for a saison; bread crust-like malt body, dry, with a very robust end bitterness, dried bitter herbs, lots of grapefruit peel (maybe the Cascade that was used?), bitterroot, with floral and mildly phenolic accents retronasally. Clean, but very much to the point in being a modern, dry, spicy, very hoppy but traditionally conceived saison; I personally would not have minded a more 'earthy' yeast character in order to have a bit more depth, nor would I have objected against a more 'orangey' presence of the Cascade - but conceptually and technically speaking, this sure is an excellent first attempt, very promising really, I'm wondering what more beers this brewing project will come up with.
