Although widely known as the habitat of the classic "black bear", the mountains of North Carolina are also home to our extremely rare Brown Bear Brown Ale. Smooth caramel and chocolate notes dominate the first taste, and then a subtle dryness cleanses the palate just in time for another sip. This is a true, sessionable English-inspired brown ale.

Draft at Catawba Morganton. Pours a clearish chestnut brown with a small beige head that dissipates. Nutty aromas with light caramel notes as it warms. Flavors feel muted on the palate, but some caramel as it warms up. Balanced finish.

2$ can from total wine durham. Pour is a darker almost black brown, yes, like a bear. Smell s typical malty brown, probably not musky like a bear would be. Seems to have a pretty good refreshing attitude, decent co2 level. Its dark without being burnt or bitter, friendly. Rather smooth fun. Good initial impressions. Not bad, good. Like a downer the hatch. This hen is a bonnie lass. Alright you wee bawbag. Really ignites the movement of your bahoochie and banger. This damsel is a hussy maiden. A wanton strumpet serving tramp. Not bad. Would by a few of these babies. Thank you Mr Scott.

2 month old can A: Deep dark brown color with a short fast falling tan head. S: Chocolate, molasses and faint leafy hops. T: Spicy bitterness with some bark and roast. Fairly dry with only mild sweetness. M: Light and clean. Prickly carbonation plays well with the peppery flavor. O: Pretty tasty with some interesting aspects. I like it.

355 ml. can. 211-18. Dark furniture brown going to black, small mocha head. Nose is stale chicory coffee, bay leaf, herbal spices, touch liquorice, herbal coffee & stale coffee grounds, old pantry. Taste is herbal coffee, chicory, bay leaf, low mocha, old chocolate, almost touch BE, dash liquorice,… Low grainy, chicory & liquorice body. Sweetness is what one wants in a brown ale in general I think and some dullness, not these old kitchen spices with bitterness, chicory coffee & old pantry tasty. Finish is lingering stale cheap coffee grounds. Not where it should be I think.

Chocolate-heavy brown, English and semisweet, but also light and watery, without much of a finish. Yeasty fade with the slightest of hoppy bitterness. Skippable.

Draft at the brewery during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours clear amber-brown with a light, foamy white head. An OK beer overall. The character is defined by toasted brown bread, dirt, dry toffee and leafy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Pretty well balanced on the finish, with simple dry bread, mild leafy bitterness. Fine.

Sample at the Biltmore Village taproom. Reddish-brown color with a medium thin light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing. Roasted malt, caramel and mild coffee in the nose. Light body with flavors of chocolate malt, coffee and slight hops. The finish is sweet with a short malty aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.
