The third iteration of the first barrel aged beer we ever made, this wild ale was aged with multiple strains of Brettanomyces and bacteria for a year in French oak, with Niagara Shiro plums thrown into the mix. We love how this beer has developed over time, and couldn’t be more proud to share the newest version, tweaked to include light acidity and a lower, more drinkable ABV. This 2016 version is all about clean brett aromatics, juicy stone fruit flavours, and a subtle but decidedly spicy oak character. The body is dry and lightly acidic, with notes of under ripe pear, apricot, and plum.

(500ml 2018 bottle shared by Herbalist, thanks!) Pours lightly hazy bright yellow with a decent sized white head ands ome lace. Notes of high bright sour tree fruit with a bit of plum and a bunch of underripe apple/pear type vibes, a sort of herbal/leafy quality, dusty brett, light to moderate oaky astringency, very lightly sweet and moderately acidic overall, with some soft minerality in the fairly dry moderately tart finish. Medium bodied with fairly full but fine frothy carbonation. Interesting, maybe it's the age but this could easily be another fruit rather than plum; I've had it a bit fresher before but not in comparison to the other versions.

Got in a BIF from Coronaeus. 500 ml bottle into signature lambic glass, 2018 vintage. Pours fairly hazy medium golden yellow color with a small fairly dense and fluffy white head with poor retention, that reduces to a minimal spotty lace cap that lingers. Minimal spotty lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour/tart/tangy plums, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, plums, oak barrels, and pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour/tart/tangy plums, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/sour plums, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, plums, oak barrels, and pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/sourness, tangy fruit, and yeast/oak spiciness balance; with minimal puckering flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tart/sourness, tangy fruit, and yeast/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 5.8%. Overall this is a fantastic fruited sour/wild ale. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, plums, oak barrels, and pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, easy, and fairly crisp to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish; not overly lactic. Fantastic balance of juicy plums, and Brett/Bacteria complexity; with great oak presence, and pale/wheat malts against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp acidic/tangy dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example. Not quite funky/barnyard enough to be a true gueuze style feel. Still really impressive American style sour/wild all around.

Thinking of my dearly departed grandmother while enjoying the beautiful Canadian scenery... Bellwoods Grandma’s Boy 5.8% Wild Ale Blend with Niagara Shiro Plums Milky hazy gold with a fizzy bright eggshell white foam. A tart bready acidic plum aroma on top of a light bodied beer. The taste is acidic fresh Pilsner malt with waxy plums up front then mouth puckering sourness. Not as complex as I expected but a we’ll done sour. You do get some honey graham notes as it warms and it truly grew on me. Ap 4 Ar 8 t 8 p 4 o 13-4
