We're big fans of the classic Old Fashioned – a 19th Century cocktail traditionally made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding Whiskey and a twist of citrus rind. This is our take, with Barley Wine as the base beer and the classic orange zest to serve. It's been in barrels for 12 months, picking up a well-rounded bourbon profile with some vanilla and caramel sweetness. Bitters optional!

Nice mahogany pour, not foamy but some white stuff there. Sweet raisiny nose, light booze, bit of vanilla. Taste has sweetness, dessert beer. Light coconut, sweet, somewhat sticky. A bit simple but OK, not bad.

Tap at beerlovers bar. Pours dark brown, creamy small head. Smell is intense, thick, sweet, typical barley wine. Taste is sweet. Very rich, roasty notes, mild chocolate. Coffee. Sweetness, some sugar ( in a good way) dried fruits... Amazing barley wine.

Bottle from Etre. Deep amber with almost no head. Sweet with loads of whiskey, some orange zest bitterness, vanilla. Warming and boozy, which I usually don't like but this is delicious.

Bottle. Didn't read the label properly - though it was going to be an old fashioned barley wine rather than a barley wine in the style of an old fashioned. Very dark reddish brown with a tan head that's immediately at the rim, then gone. Yes, a big whisky and orange peel aroma, but you can tell it's a beer with rich bread and dried fruit (sultanas, muscatels). Full bodied, low carbonation. Rich and very sweet indeed, but again the impression is there's just about enough beer to keep the whisky to a supporting role. Partly that's firm pale malt and dried fruit, partly gently spiced bitterness. But the fat vanilla and almost unctuous sweetness are knocking ever louder at the door.
