We're big fans of the classic Old Fashioned – a 19th Century cocktail traditionally made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding Whiskey and a twist of citrus rind. This is our take, with Barley Wine as the base beer and the classic orange zest to serve. It's been in barrels for 12 months, picking up a well-rounded bourbon profile with some vanilla and caramel sweetness. Bitters optional!

Almost clear amber - brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and a little soft, reasonable fine carbonation. Sweet malts, good sweet caramel. Mild spice. Rich ripe sweet fruitiness. The mildest bourbon touch and very light spice on the finish. Tidy sweet drinkable barleywine. However a little old school salty bitterness would have gone a long way here.

Draft @ Taplokaal Gist, 11% ABV. Didnt mention any barrel aging, but could well have been, as I mentioned it to my friends. Hazy copper color, short frothy head. Aroma of lots of candy sweetness, cookie, slight vanilla, some port notes. Absolutely lovely. Quite sweet in taste as well with cookie and fruity candy. Cherry and vanilla sojnds very likely actually. I absolutely loved this beer, especially from tap, which made it very smooth and dangerously drinkable, despite its thick texture.

Keg at Brewdog Shepherds Bush, London. A dark brown coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Sweet, caramel, bourbon, vanilla aroma. Tastes similar, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit. Incredibly sweet barley wine but I liked it quite a lot.
