Cask at The Outlook, Reading. Dark brown with a thick cream head. Nice smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Everything seems right at first- pleasant chocolate and coffee flavours set against a mild roastiness- but there’s something less salubrious behind, something artificial like pear drops or candy sugar. It was only a light off-flavour and I couldn’t quite pin it down, but it definitely took the edge off of my enjoyment of this beer.

Cask @ The Stapleton Tavern, Stroud Green. Rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, some coffee and a little sweetness. Good stuff.

Not black but very dark with a bubbly head. Has some very light roasted malts in its taste but a little more obvious in its aroma.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms, London. Pours red-brown with a creamy, beige head. Burnt malts in the nose, some light coffee, dark leaves. Light sweet flavour, some dark fruits, berries, mild chocolate, light dirt. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet finish, some dirty berries, light ash, faint cocoa, burnt leaves. OK beer.

Cask at the Royal Oak, Winchester. Almost black with a Ribena glow against the light, and a ring of tan head; fruity, chocolate aroma; sharp in the mouth with a soft milk chocolate body; and a dry coffee grouns finish. Rather thin and lacking the expected fruity taste, but otherwise good.

Cask conditioned: A nutbrown beer with no head (cask). The aroma is pretty sweet with fruit notes. The flavor is very sweet of a good maltblend and with a really good hoppy bitterness - a great balanced beer.
