44CL can de Malt Attacks, BB 04/06/2020, batch# Y19B164.

Christmas beer by Uiltje, a DIPA with additional juniper berries, orange peel and ginger; can from Arendsnest in Amsterdam. Medium thick, mousy, egg-white, irregularly edged head breaking quickly in the middle, hazy orange-hued peach blonde robe with small flakes of something unidentifiable throughout - looking like the precipitated proteins in a very old beer, really. Quite distinctive aroma of orange flesh or indeed fresh orange peel, pink grapefruit, tomato 'consommé', vegetable bouillon even, sweetsour sauce, green bell peppers, gin, cheese rind. Medium fruity onset, sweetish with a sourish edge, softish carbonation, hints of orange, tomato, pumpkin and parsnip, full and soft, bit creamy mouthfeel; biscuity-doughy malt 'soil' soaked in bitter-spicy and citric hoppiness with some added bitterness from the juniper berries and the orange peel, though neither of these two ingredients are actually recognizable retronasally contrary to the ginger, which is clearly there; some gin-like alcohol and yeasty aspects in the tail. Weird, with the added ginger performing an interesting side role, while the juniper berries and orange peel tend to act rather as antagonists; takes a while to get used to, and even then the flavours keep clashing, making one wonder if throwing all these elements together really is a good idea, Christmas or not. Uiltje has done much better in the IPA field.

22nd December 2019
Can. Almost clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate still has decent fine minerally carbonation. Smooth malts, a light creamy sweetness. Strong piney hops, smooth and minty, bordering on menthol. Juicy semi ripe orangey citrus. A whisper of hop spice. Smooth finish. Wow! Very minty orange. Reminds me of something, mebbe a half forgotten cocktail. Amusing...
