The fourth of 7 beers celebrating a literary classic, and one of our favorites, Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman. German smoked malt, chocolate malt and roasted malt work in harmony with carefully chosen hops for a smooth, smokey take on a classic style.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains and a nice smoke with a touch of sweetness and roast supporting. Flavor has dark grains and roasted malts with a growing warming smoke note.

6 week old bottle A: Poured 1 of head retaining well atop a purple black body. S: Smoked peat, roast coffee and faint chocolate. T: Some sweet chocolate alongside the smoked malt. Coffee still present also. Herbal hop notes toward the end. Subtle flavors. M: Surprisingly stiff carbonation, smooth texture and fairly clean finish. O: Very nice though the flavor seems a bit lackluster, with good balance and nothing dominant.

On tap at Bells. Pours a deep blackish brown with a thin head and aromas of smoke, leather, and chocolate. I don’t get the smoke on the palate but it is a nice mix of chocolate and leather. Smooth mouthfeel. Pleasant.

Bottle - pours a dark amber with a fluffy off-white head - creamy texture - medium dry with a minerality that adds some depth - smoke is moderate but robust, and settles in with the roast and earth of the malt nicely, avoiding the abrasive bite that often happens with these smoked porters - very good.

12 oz bottle. Pours a very dark red brown with a tan head. Smoky dark malt aroma, cocoa and coffee. Flavor is pretty smoky, but the palate isn't heavy. Smoke, bitter cocoa, coffee. This is in that nice spot for me where it's flavorful without the smoke being too much. Very nice.

Murky garnet-brown-black pour, thin cream head. Nose smoky with dark chocolate and roasted malt. Dry, bitter body, mostly smoked peat with unsweetened chocolate and roast. Medium-bodied, average mouthfeel. Decent but nothing new.

Very smoky, loads of campfire goodness backed up by mellow chocolate and anise notes, finished off with a dry woody bitterness and a lingering dose of char. Not as complex or rich as I'd like--a little more depth might tamp down the very active embers in the fade--but tasty.

12 ounce bottle from Woodman's Appleton, 12/4/19. Black, large foamy dark brown head, fair retention. Aroma of strong hammy smoke followed by dark chocolate and roast. A bit of charred wood and cherry. Taste is strong smoke, dark chocolate, cherry, coffee, roast. A bit of meatiness. Medium bodied, slick and oily, moderate bitterness. Definitely smoke forward so be aware if that's not your thing. Excellent.
