13 April 2019. At First Timternational Beer Tasting, Ghent. Cheers to Ghent beer crew! Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, small, foamy, white head; some lacing. Aroma of freshly cut apple, unripe pear, yeast, white bread, grass, cheese, vague cow fodder & manure. Taste is light fruity sweet, rather restrained apple & pear, cheesy & yeasty touch; light bitter tones of grass & straw, a bit grassy hoppy already, sourish & bready edges. Dryish, grassy hoppy finish, more lingering grain on a dry-yeasty character (effectively yeast tablets come to mind). Medium body, slick/fluffy texture, soft carbonation. Clean, very drinkable Pilsener, not very complex but decent enough.

German style Pilsener by Naparbier, sample from a bottle shared at a tasting by Gentse Biervereniging, hosted by tderoeck. Thinnish, snow white, opening head, lightly hazy golden robe with straw blonde hue. Aroma of soggy white bread, flour, damp straw, dull sweaty graininess, camomile, pond water full of green algae. Fairly neutral onset, straightforward cereally graininess with a white-bready touch, minerally accents accompanying the entire palate till deep into the finish, where a grassy, floral, medium long ‘noble’ hop bitterness has a mildly drying effect while grainy sweetishness lingers. Clearly a full-malt pale lager seeking balance of malt and hops – ‘honest’ and correct, but some mainstream German Pilseners exhibit more hop character than this one so even if intended as a ‘standard’ Pilsener, it could have been a bit more generously hopped for me. Feels more like a (‘Münchener’) Helles, actually.
