Hazy blonde. Fruity klsch aroma w quite a bit of yeastiness as well. Quite bitter for the style. Yeasty, dry with a lean pale malt character. Nice take on the style.

500mL bottle, pours a cloudy orange with a fairly large white head. Aroma is very grainy, with cereal malts and light grassy hops - very restrained on the nose. Flavour brings out lots of full cereal grains, some wheat, and dry grassy hops. One of the fullest and most pleasant flavoured kolschs I've had. Highly drinkable, thirst-quenching, and dry on the finish from the hops. Great stuff.

500 ml bottle labelled as Freigeist Ottekolong. Pours a clear light gold with moderate head. Light aromas of limes and bread. Flavors of grains/cereal, citrus, and cardboard. Very unoffensive and easy to drink but the style tends towards the industrial.

200 ml draft @ Braustelle. It is hazy! & clearly unfiltered, looking absolutely nothing like the other Kölsch’s I tried in Cologne. It also sports a smaller creamy white head. Nose is full of hops, raw onion & barnyard hops, slightly zesty, lots of fresh hops, freshly made it seems, lovely. It is almost IPA-like. Taste is pretty hoppy (& extremely so compared with everything else I tried within the style), bitter grass, onion, barnyard, tad milky, raw herbs, lighter sweet malt underneath, fruity, it is not brutal or anything, very easy to drink. Distinctly nothing else like all the other Kölsch’s, a completely unique take & break from tradition just like everything else at Braustelle. Body is creamy & way fuller than other examples of the style. Great stuff, interesting take on style, seems like a mix of modern influences and what Kölsch probably was 100+ years ago before they started changing it to compete with pils / lager.

Rating from 2008: Sehr CO²-Arm. --> 8+12+8+9 = 9,60

On tap at Trappist. Listed as Ottekolong and 6% ABV. Flavor is rather fruity with a lot of bright pear, light citrus and faint banana. Light honey character. Not much grain or hop aroma. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a moderately thick white head with nice retention and moderately high lacing. No legs. Flavor has a nice sweet graininess with a light bitterness. Lighter fruitiness than in the aroma. Slightly mineral water character. Mouthfeel is light bodied with very soft, moderate carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a pretty tasty kolsch with a nice soft carbonation and good mineral character.

Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass zippy, nice creamy head. Starts mild but not washy, fine fresh-fruity, malty-yeasty. Sweet background without being too mich. Notes of apricot. Well balanced finish, quite drinkable. Nice!

From a big bottle. Says Freigeist Ottekolong, go figger. $3 at vintage. Smell is just mildly beery yeast. Not filtered fer sure, unfiltered kolsch. Head is big, white and goes rocky, at least 4 inches. First taste is off the head, slightly bitter. Finally I get a taste off the liquid. The bitterness, which is moderate for a kolsch, seem to fade as the session continues. Lots of co2 makes this a fun beer on the palate. Yes, that sizzle makes this quite interesting as we slug. Sediment on the bottom of the bottle almost makes this look like a hefe. Mild like a hefe but it has no spices. Yes, gets better n a little more intriguing as we sit it out. That slight bitterness never really goes away, it hangs even for a few dull moments after the bottle’s gone. Yep, kinda fun overall.
