Clear deep amber, close to black body with a small, dense brown head. Wonderful aroma of dark malt, caramel and peat. Flavor is very complex with different layers all the way through the glass. Sweet, peated malt is the obvious first impression, then caramel malt, maple syrup, dry fruit, soy, warming alcohol and balancing bitterness. Then some nuances of nuts, spices, herbs and lots of unami. Full bodied and endless aftertaste. A big, bold beer with lots of flavors, not even close to what to expect from a brown ale and definitively not a beer for everyone but I found it very tasty and interesting with lots of flavors to explore where the sum ends up as a pleasant beer.

Bottle at home, picked up in Paris a few years ago, at home 2nd January 2021. Pours a thick black imperial stout looking beer. Aroma is liquorice and peat, iodine and smoke. Taste is pretty forward, umami, liquorice, tar, caramel, liquor, delightful, sticky and thick mouthfeel, delicious stuff.

15 December 2018. Black Beer Fest, Ieper. Cheers to Anke, Erwin & Ama Deke! Hazy dark brown to black; no lacing. Aroma of candied plum, raisin, peat, rubber, smoked ham & herring, bacon, salted peanut. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite chocolatey, peanut, smokey edge, pure peat & ham; some dark fruits like raisin & blackcurrant to soften it up; light roasted bitterness brings toast, roasted nuts, herbal & spicy touch, umami accent of cooked ham & bacon. Dryish, herbal & peppery hoppy finish, lingering peat, smoke, dark fruit, warming liqueur alcohol. Full body, oily texture, flat carbonation. Bit messy, weird, but not necessarily bad.

Pours thick and gluppity from the bottle. Brown, syrupy and lacking any sign of a crown. Aroma is smoked bacon and maple syrup. Taste is salty sweet, full of maple syrup, soy sauce and bacon grit. Body is thick, syrupy, sticky and goes down with an unforgiving feel. This isn’t really the beer, just the sludge that formed up somewhere in the pipes. Interesting enough to make me finish the glass and ponder its multi-faceted layers of sick despair, but not very appealing.

330 ml. bottle. Bottled 10/2017. Very dark brown faint ruby hue syrup with no head. Nose is extremely gravy, soy sauce, very syrupy, herbs cooked in soy sauce, extreme gravy,… stupidly thick sludge mouthfeel, pure soy sauce, gravy, umami, pot roast, umami, faintest sweetness cookie in the back. Like drinking a very thick alcoholic gravy, very weird, not really what I expected from a maple syrup Christmas beer. Way, way too gravy with soy sauce, thick syrup mixed in. Maple is barely there in the back & obscured by all the rest.
