The first of our small batches brewed on the old Wild Horse brewing system, this black beer is a twist on the classic Belgian Wit. It is brewed with three kinds of wheat and black and crystal malts. Roast and clove notes are its major flavors; it finishes dry.

On tap at the Holiday Ale Fest. Pours a clear black color with a medium beige head. Light chocolate, some roast and fruity hops. The flavor is sort of pushing toward Black IPA, medium roast, bitter chocolate, fruity hops. Smooth.

Bottle from tap. Pours opaque black with a medium, creamy white head. Light licorice aroma with bread and dark malts. Fairly sweet flavor with notes of dark candi sugar, raisin prune and faint bitterness. There is some slightly odd sour tinge, which may or may not be intended. Light to medium in body with average carbonation. Finishes sweetly with more dark, ripe fruit notes and some roasted malts. Not bad.

Dark brown color. Coriander, molasses, caramel exude from the nose. Very light bodied with lots of molasses and caramel. Lingering caramel finish. Well made, unique brew, but by nothing that I would actively seek out again.

Dark brown with a tan head. Toasted malts, light fruits, little spice, hops. I found it to be rather thin in the body. An OK brew, but I can’t see myself picking this on up again.

A dark clear brown ale with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, a strange aroma of burned wood extract, licorice and chinotto. In mouth, a nice nutty and chalky wit, with nice caramel malt, and some fennel seeds. Interesting. On tap at brewpub, August 16 2009.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a medium black color with a small dark tan head. The aroma was vague sour and tangy malts. The flavor was tangy, sour, lightly hoppy and just rather off. It really tasted like this beer was trying to be several things and failing horribly at doing anything.

On tap: creamy off-white head and not much of it. Black body for all intents and purposes. heavy sweet and espresso aromas. Espresso taste and a bunch of sweetness in the taste as well. Some alcohol undertones. Mineral like taste at points. Unique taste for a stout.

Draft. Rich offe color with a small light tan head. Caramel and light roast aroma. Caramel, light roast, and earthy spice flavors. Medium-light body - lighter than expected. Lingering sweet caramel, spice, light roast and a bunch of background flavors - one of which needs to step forward and add somethign to the beer.
