The inspiration for this dark and mysterious collaboration with Dugges is an old Gothenburg Porter; our recipe is loosely based on historical malt bills. There’s also a modern touch, with a hint of peated malt and a nice alcohol backbone to really layer up the roasty flavours. In Scandinavian folklore, Draugen is the ghost of a sailor, now often associated with anything dark or mysterious about the sea.

(Bottle) Dark brown colour, almost black, with foamy beige head. Malty, roasted nose with black bread, dark chocolate, peat, smoke, liquorice, treacle and a touch of black pepper. Malty, roasted, slightly smoky taste with notes of dark chocolate, black rye bread, liquorice, tobacco, roasted nuts, black pepper, treacle and a generous coffee, bitterness in the finish. Full body, quite sweet. Tasty and complex imperial stout, with a touch of peat smoke and a slightly sticky sweetness. Very nice.

25/IX/20 - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte), shared @ home, BB: 23/X/18 (2020-940)
Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: nice roast, lots of malts, caramel, alcohol, bit oxidized, some coffee, slightly smoky, campfire. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: good roast, lots of dark chocolate, bit sweet, caramel, nice bitterness, sugary. Aftertaste: nice roast, caramel, malty, pretty bitter, some chocolate, nice stuff, love it! Not getting much smoke in the flavour though. But then again, you’re talking to a BBQ-head… :p

Sweet-ish, chocolately, dark malty and minimally smoky aroma, notes of dark chocolate, Belgian chocolate, some peat, a touch of smoke, leather, wood. Taste is sweet, caramel malty, chocolately dark malty, rather alcoholic, minimally peaty, notes of milk chocolate, caramel, plum wine. Relatively watery texture, a tad too alcoholic.

Bottle at home in Hackney - sourced from online. Pours deep brown with a frothy, yellow-tan head. Has strong roasted malt character, bitter ash, charcoal, baking cocoa, mellow smoke. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, dry and ashy, more charcoal, strong bitter dark chocolate, scorched earth. Lingering alcohol heat in the aftertaste, more bitter ash. Not bad.
