Sample at Kurtkeller 027: Sante Adairius-tastic 01 on 07/30/2017. The beer is a nearly opaque brown-black color with a medium thick beige head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, tart fruit and chocolate. Medium to full body with flavors of roast malt, tart cherry and rum raisin. The finish is creamy and tart with a malt and cherry aftertaste. A little odd, but above average overall.

Nose is earthy, light roast, cocoa nibs, tangy dark berries, raisens, spice, fruit cake. Taste comprises light booze, subtle roast, tarte berry, lactic tang, earthy cocoa, dark toffee, dates, cake mix. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok tangy fruit impy.

Forgetfu Tasting at ChrisOs. Opaque black - brown beer, good fluffy pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Light fine carbonation. Light roast malt, touch of dark chocolate. Medium tangy souness with mild dark fruits. Light semi dry finish. Tasty enough but yet to taste a great sour stout.

Bottle thanks to Bruce! It pours near black with a thick tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, creaminess, milky, mild acidity, cocoa and some jammy fruits. The taste is crisp, tart, toasty, roasted malt, cocoa, earth, some acidity, sherbet and granny smith apple with a tart, somewhat acidic finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. I am not sold on the sour stout style, but this is pretty tasty anyhow.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Bruce. Pours black-brown with a creamy, beige head. Some acetic berries in the nose, hints of wood, earth. Light to medium sweet flavor with loads of berry tang, grapes, mild earthy bitterness, burnt wood, faint cocoa. Medium to full bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Warming finish with decent acetic tang, more berries, vague roast and cocoa, low bitterness, wood. Not bad.

Bottle@ a mini SARA share - thanks Nolen! Pours opaque black with a small tan head and good lacing. Aroma has a bit of funk, and lots of roastiness underneath. Perhaps a touch of coffee, a bit of raisin. I am not getting the chocolate that others notice. Flavor is medium sweet, lightly funky and medium sour. Funkiness opens up a bit as the beer warms. Lightish body, high effervescent carbonation. Nice beer.

Bottle @ What the Funk Denver 2014. Pours a black appearance with a thin brown head. Kind of a strange beer but quite good. You can definitely get the rum and its spiciness in the nose. There’s also some chocolate and roast and mild caramel. Also some dark grape and plum notes. The flavor is fairly tart and tannic. Some plum and berry fruit notes in the flavor. A little boozy but the rum complements the beer surprisingly well. Way better than I expected.

750ML split with some new friends. Pours pitch black. Creamy espresso head that fades fast. Nose is dominated with lactic acid, papaya and grape skins. Just a touch of roasted walnuts. Taste is pretty nice. The tart tastes are persistent start to finish. A mix of chocolate and cherry pie linger with only a slight bitterness. Way more sour than stout. It actually comes across with crooked stave/ rodenbach taste. Not as dry as expected. Still, solid. Oh and about the rum. There’s not much of it.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma has quite a bit of dark fruit notes including tart berries, cherries and cassis. Light chocolate and roast character along with a bit of an umami, soy sauce character. Pours black with a moderately sized mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. Light lacing and medium sized legs. Flavor starts with a light sweetness and moderate tartness. There is actually more malt character than I usually get from dark sours with some moderate chocolate notes and light roast. Lots of tart, dark fruit including berries and cherries. Low bitterness and moderate alcohol spice in the finish. Light rum barrel character that adds some tropical fruit notes. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low acidic astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall another interesting beer from SARA, but definitely one of my least favorite beers from them; I’m not a huge fan of dark sours though. There is a weird note in the aroma that reminds me of meat drippings and soy sauce. UPDATE - Poured from a bottle on June 29, 2016 - no more weird meaty, soy note in the aroma, just lots of sherry, berries and cherries. I think this beer has improved a good amount with age and am bumping my score from a 3.5 to a 3.7.
