Rated from old notes. Unique, almost creamy taste. Lots of caramel and malt. A dark lager with a smooth, rich taste. Slightly more body would improve the rating.

Bought in Spring 2004, at Glenville Bev. in Scotia NY. Hazy red copper colour with a thin off-white head. Nice caramel and cherry/red licorice in aroma, notes of cinnamon hearts candies. Sweet malt with nice spicy notes, some light oxidation, not bad considering the bottle is 1 year old!

2004 bottle. Pours quite brown, that’s for sure. Very homogenous brown color, milky almost, but not unfiltered or bottle conditioned it seems. Small tan head. Aroma of malt, malt and more malt. Lots of chewy sweet, brown sugar-like malt, some caramel and nuttiness, rich and fully sweet. Flavor however, takes the sweetness to a new level. It’s all I really taste, thick, almost syrupy, definitely cloying. It strikes a caramel/brown sugar malt note and just keeps on droning along with it. Ok, I’m ready for some balance, dryness, roastiness, anything? Nope, syrupy sweet caramel malts are all I get. Good medium body for a dunkel, low carbonation. Ok, off to the drain you go.

The aroma is light with notes of roasted malt and sweetness. The color is light brown and it has a small head. The flavor is dry with notes of caramel and malt.

Golden brown colour. Hints of molasses, brown bread crust. Dry brown malt notes (though I doubt they use it in a dunkel). Rather thin, though. Toasty, minerally finish. Disappointing given my previous experiences with this brewery.

This is a decent dark lager - quite a lot of roastiness in the aroma and flavor - actually, the aroma and flavor are almost exactly the same - nutty, slightly sweet, with some hops arriving late - finish is pretty watery - a decent effort, but don't go looking for this one.

Bottled. Nut brown. Roasty with big crystal malt character. Very aromatic. Clean, hard mouthfeel, low bitterness. Very American in style.

This had the appearance and name of a dark lager, but totally tasted like a dark english ale: buttery diacetyl out the wazoo. A bit out of place in a German lager. Still, it was really nice tasting. Brownish red color with lasting white head. Sweetish toffeeish buttery aroma.
