Bouteille 660ml. (2005)

Aroma: Accents of chocolate and molasses are immediately jumping up the nose with sub notes of coffee. However, the aroma is vanishing fast; 30seconds and it becomes very difficult to dig out anything else. Appearance: Black, opaque, head is generous, creamy and long lasting. It takes several minutes ’till it sticks to glass and leaves a little lacing. Taste: Attack is very coffee, very bitter, but chocolate is taking over quickly. Mouth feel is round and unctuous and finish is all chocolate and long lasting. A good stout, going down very easy and unpretentious.

Originally rated March 2006. Bought at the Dépanneur de la Rive in Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Caution: Watch out for the crazy head ! It is insanely huge. Easy to overflow, but luckily, this one is safe in my English pint glass. Very good, very long lasting brown creamy head. The nose is of roasted malts with mild chocolat malts in the back. Medium-bodied and dry mouthfeel. Sourness is found in the taste, with some light roasted malt and hints of smoke in the aftertaste. Does not really feel like a sweet stout, but more like a dry stout. Still, quite drinkable, but nothing exceptional.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a dirty brown foamy head with good retention and some pretty good lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some light coffee notes. Taste is dominated by some dry roasted malt notes with some light coffee and some subtle black chocolate. Body is full with some great carbonation. Actually better then what I expected; this brewery seems to be improving lately.

Brown bottle, 341 ml, purchased at Le Grand Duc on August 7 2007, savoured on September 5 2007; eye: black, opaque, cappuccino head that turns into a tiny ring, no lacing; nose: soft roasted malt, light chocolate; mouth: light roasted malt, beer wraps around the tongue leaving a feeling of thickness, light smoke, a bit lactic, surprising arrival of more hops than expected, finale that ends abruptly in hops with a hint of roasted malt and sugar, average astringency, slightly sweet, lightly bitter, medium body, a bit thin, good carbonation; overall: ok FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 341 ml, achetée chez Le Grand Duc le 7 août 2007, savourée le 5 septembre 2007; œil : noire, opaque, mousse cappuccino qui se transforme en un petit anneau, pas de dentelle; nez : malt torréfié doux, léger chocolat; bouche : léger malt rôti, enveloppe la langue au point où elle semble lourde, légère fumée, un peu lactique, apparition surprenante de beaucoup de houblon, finale qui se termine un peu abruptement en houblon avec une pointe de torréfaction et de sucre, astringence moyenne, très légèrement sucrée, légèrement amère, corps moyen, un peu mince, bonne carbonatation; en résumé : ok

A pitch black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is slightly sour with primary notes of chocolate. The flavor is also sour combined with notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The mouthfeel is very carbonated.

Deep black stout with an ashtray aroma. In mouth, mediciny malt...this is a band-aid stout with an awful bilous taste. A drain pour.

Bottled. Very black with brief beige head. Lemony licorice aroma. Rounded, acidic and roasty. Medium bodied. Similar to some of the less developed, homebrew like french stouts I’ve head.
