The Alt is a classic German ale from the Düsseldorf region. It has dark copper colours which can be reminiscent of English Pale Ales. By using a different type of yeast, the aromas are less fruity and more neutral than a pale ale. The use of different types of malt also gives the beer a less caramel flavour than the English ales. To taste, the beer is mildly bitter and has fresh cereal flavours.

Dégustée en fût sur place. De couleur cuivrée et claire. Nez de grains de céréales fraîches, moyennement sucrées et légèrement rôties, moyen de pain, léger de houblon herbeux et de caramel avec des traces de biscuits et de noix. Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen ainsi qu’une texture aux notes huileuses. Goût de grains de céréales moyennement sucrées et rôties avec des petites traces fruitées (agrumes) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de pain frais avec des notes de biscuits ainsi que de faibles traces de caramel puis en finale l’on retrouve une légère amertume asséchante de houblon herbeux et floral avec des notes de noix. Post-goût moyen et sec, légèrement amer de houblon herbeux et floral avec des notes de noix et quelques traces rôties. (29 janvier 2013)

Draught, 5.4% at the brewpub. Nutty aroma, hint of sour rag. Almost clear dark amber colour. Creamy tan head. The flavour is roasted with a rough bitterness. OK mouthfeel.

On draught at the brewery, March 2005 with Muzzlehatch and tiggmtl. Clear amber-auburn body, tending more towards orange, with a light film of off-white head. Aroma is very challenging to pull from this one, but sticking my nose practically in the glass, I come away with light caramel, toasted grains and buttery/sour yeast. A bit of refreshing grassy hops as well. Flavor begins quite dry, grainy and lightly astringent, with some nuttiness and a touch of sugar to follow. Hints of light, dry toffee and a bit of floral hops, with a very low yeast apparency for the style. Medium to medium-light body with moderate carbonation. I can’t say I was terribly impressed and it seems that part of the appeal might simply be the novelty of this being a fairly rare style. I thought paienne was a much better beer than this.

Light red copper with a peppery nose. Pleasant biscuit aroma with a nice german hops finish. Very good bodied.
