The ratio Phi was discovered by ancient scholars. It was used to design the Acropolis in Greece and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. DaVinci determined the human body was proportioned using this same ratio and applied it throughout his work. Nature uses this "divine ratio" in the design of everything from DNA to planets and galaxies. So we asked ourselves a question. "What would be the result of a beer designed on these principles?" Here it is, a beer recipe generated by Phi. Is it divine? You be the judge.

Very hazy orange coloured body with a small white head and a nice golden tint. Strong aroma of coriander seed, wheat, malt, hops, sweet sugar and also some curacao. Full-bodied; Strong sweet taste of oranges, lemons and a bit of grapes with sugars and a good malt backbone with wheat most prevalent. Aftertaste very very strong and wheatie with a bunch of sugars throughout. Overall, a very strong and potent beer with plentiful amounts of sweet tastes with some nice hop and traditional ’tripel’ tastes too. A great beer - try it if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Dearborn, Michigan on 08-April-2006 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Deep black with nice moka head. Sweet choclate and salty soya in aroma. Rather bizarre taste of sour coffee, astringent. Sweet and rich, and rather cloying. May 2005.

Bottled. 2005 version. Very odd. Taste is deeply fruity, with sour cherries predominating. Really overruns any malt profile for me. I can see others get the same impression. Not a terrible beer, but I wonder if this is what they intended?

Deep amber/brown pour with moderate brown lacework - malty, caramel-like aroma, some toffee and brown sugar - medium-tart flavor, with black cherry and toffee - quite dry and roasty toward the end - some vinous notes - very different from other high gravity ales that blow you away with sweetness.

An unclear brown beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet, but with notes of sourness combined with notes of coffee. The flavor is very sour and quite dry with notes of malt, roasted bread, and coffee.

Bottled. Dark brown. Grassy nose. Yeasty and lemony. Thin, with some caramel but mostly vinegar. Clearly problematic.

Very dark amber color. Just strong caramel characteristics, but a light sourness in the taste makes of it a little special. Not bad.

Pour is a deep black with almost no head. Aroma is chocolate and hops. Flavor is sweet chocolate and dark malts. Hops come in at the end making this a very excellent brew. If i knew algerbra would make a brew like this i would have paid attention more in class.

2004 bottle. Dark oak brown pour, with some barely perceptible deep amber tinges on the edges, small off-white/beige, disipating head. Aroma of bitter roast, dry hazelnuts and coffee, some strange astringent fruity notes. Flavor begins with some lightly dry toffee, some hints of milk chocolate and then quickly goes very dry and sour. Not sour as in sour yeast, but more of a sour milk, or sour/bitter coffee rind. Toasted astringent notes abound yet there is a stickiness to the body that is out of place. Heavily filtered and thin on the finish, I found the biggest problem to be the alcohol burn near the finish. The sweetness/body do not nearly hold this much alcohol and astringency/dryness. Stale, old and lifeless aftertaste that I find in a majority of New Holland bottled beers.

The brewery rep didn’t think you could classify this beer into any one style, but after one sip it is easily identified as a porter. There were flavors of coffee and sweet malt. Also herbal flavors. The beer is black and thick with no head.
