Greek Fire is the legendary combustible mixture consisting of crude petroleum, sulfur and oil that could not be extinguished and offered a decisive advantage to the naval forces of the Byzantine Empire. So now think of a thick, oily, imperial stout, through which light cannot pass, that lights a fire in one’s belly with its strong alcohol content. And then the association becomes clear.

Can at home. Pours oily black with a handsome brown head. Nose is chocolate, big booze, molasses, a hint of weird but unrecogniseable, somewhat bitter and somewhat sweet touch. Taste is sweet mainly, showing booze, raisins and molasses, but there’s that weird bitterness to it again. Long lasting, warming sweet finish, medium to heavy body, soft carbo. Could be a real nice, straightforward pure impy if it wasn’t for that weird bitterness bith in aroma and taste.

33 cl bottle at NuBeerBar, recommendation of the friendly bartender. A glossy, jet black, dark as a moonless night pour with barely a ring of tawny head. Beautiful. Aroma is huge coffee, cocoa, chocolate milkshake, tonka bean, leather, fireplace. Wow, yo, wow. Very slightly sweet onset, but you'd think it is dry due to its salty next step. Very velvety mouthfeel, with enough crispness to balance the incredible bitterness. Very long-lingering bitter finish, with mellow hints of butterscotch, coffee and cacao. Boy, have I fallen in love.

21/V/22 - sample @ Leuven Innovation, BB: n/a (2022-556) Thanks to Sebletitje for sharing today’s beers!

Cloudy dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige brown head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots and lots of maple syrup, roasted pecan nuts, oxidized, some soy sauce. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: weird, bit sourish, heavy roast, dry, oxidized, maple and pecan nuts. Aftertaste: alcohol burn, sourish, more maple syrup, dry finish.

Sample during Leuven Innovation '22, shared with Tderoeck and Untappd duo.
