The energy and audacity of the fixed gear courier inspired us to create Fixed Gear™, a big, bold American Red IPA. It pours a glaring crimson tone with a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma, thanks to an aggressive Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook dry hopping. Gratuitous amounts of dark caramel malts lend Fixed Gear™ its immodest, malty spine, while Chinook and Cascade hops impart its balanced citrus bite. This one’s got an attitude!

Bottle. Amber body with a frothy, off-white head. slowly diminishing. Aroma of toasted grain, cookie, pine, resin. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finiehs lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Best thing about it is the lingering bitterness. Otherwise, it’s mostly raw hop taste, though that is balanced with malt sweetness.

Keg at The Pony Bar UES, NYC. Pours clear, rich amber with a small, creamy foam head. Character holds caramel malts, light berries, piney hops, toasty sugars. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Very faintly syrupy. Light warmth towards the end, somewhat sticky, faintly resinous with more pine, a bit of toasted malts, caramel. Fine beer.

Pours deep amber into a Sam glass. Off-white head with medium retention recedes leaving spot lacing to coat surface. Caramel and bread aromas. Medium bodied with sourdough and caramel upfront turning to a lasting roasted resin finish.

On draught at the brewery, July 2012. Dark amber color. Hop aroma before the glass is even near my nose. Closer inspection has very dry hops. Flavor is bitter with hops as well, and this is one of the most flavorful amber ales I have had anywhere.

22oz bomber poured into a shaker. Pours a lightly cloudy dark amber with about 2 fingers of off-white head. Aroma of lots of bready malt with a good bit of citrus and resin hops. Taste is light bitter. Some grassy hops and bready malt. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Flat carbonation and not much of a finish. Overall, not bad. Nothing I would seek out.

Taster at Standard Market in Westmont, March 10, 2012. The server told me about using Centennial and Cascade, and this does have a nice hoppy smell. A little cloudy reddish brown, ring of foam. Nice big hoppy taste, too. Malts just slightly in the background. Stands out differently than an IPA, just a nice hoppy red ale. 7-4-7-4-15 Sample from the 2011 Midwest Beer Fest that’s still on my phone. Sample poured from a bottle with a nice short layer of foam, a little hoppy smell. Just a straight hoppy beer smell. A little fruity backing from a warm ale fermentation. A nice combination that I haven’t had from Lakefront in the past few years. A good hoppy red ale with caramel malts. Quite frankly one of the better Lakefront beers. 6-4-7-4-14. So both rating total 3.7. Glad to see I was consistent.

Bottle. Pours a nice ruby copper color with a small off white head. Hoppy, fruity, malty aromas. Taste is dry hops with malt backbone. Medium bodied and pretty easy to drink. Nice for its style.
