Café brun, plus moka et caramel que l'originale qui procure un caractère unique à cette bière.

12oz bottle pours a dark black with some tan head. Nose has chocolate, licorice, sweetened Vietnamese coffee, dark pumpernickel bread. Flavor is licorice, malt, burnt caramel, nice sweet coffee, tons of flavor. Medium bodied, roasty and dry. I liked this with the lower ABV, I thought everything sung.

At Gollem, Antwerp. Lighter version of this famed Canadian stout, with lightly lacing, pale greyish beige, moussy head quickly opening in the middle, and blackish robe with translucent, hazy mahogany edges. Aroma of beef stock cubes, butterscotch, coffee powder, baked black olives, bitter chocolate, old nut shells, dried thyme, hint soy sauce. Restrained dried fruit sweetishness drenched in fairly thick, beef stock- and somewhat soy sauce-like umami, sourish roasted barley, dry, medium carbo, smooth and 'fatty', oily mouthfeel. Nutty malt body, bitter chocolate, hard butterscotch, sourishness continuing in a quite pronounced way but covered in this nutty, toasty maltiness and a spicy but soft roastedness of old black coffee; spicy hop note as well. Remarkably full-bodied for a 6% ABV stout, but a tad too much in umami and old nutshell and old coffee sourishness for me, this is not quite at the same quality level as the original for me.

Bottle served in a snifter. Celebrating my rainless Typhoon Day (paid day off!) with a Dieu du Ciel Veniel Peche Mortel. This also marks the 18th Anniversary of their Montreal brewpub and my decision to visit my hometown for Christmas. I paired it with a curry and the nose was a lovely soft spicy sweet coffee. Medium to light bodied with a sharp carbonation. The taste is balanced coffee and I'd say this lower ABV take on their classic coffee stout should not remain a one off. It pairs well with curry accentuating the earthy mushroom and curry roue flavors. Tasty lunch!

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice espresso notes with some roasted malt and light black chocolate notes are also noticeable. Taste is a nice mix of roasted malt with black chocolates notes with floral espresso notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Solid mix of roasted malt and espresso notes with no astringency and nice coffee undertones.
