"Can you fill these empty barrels with something fun?" That was the challenge Kjetil presented me with over a coffee a stormy Tuesday morning in October."How about something strong and dark?" I wondered. "25% dark malts, 30% rye, 28 degres Plato."That’ll never work." said Kjetil. 1 kilo malts/L, 48 hours of brewing and 2 years on old Armanac barrels later, I feel free to say: "Well, wouldn’t you know... it worked".

Sample @ Nøgne Ø tasting, Kick. Totally black, oily body with just a thin, brown film on top. Strong aroma of dark malt, liquorice, coffee, dry fruit, spices, wood and vinous. Flavor is heavy dark malt, coffee, chocolate, lots of dry fruit, liquorice, oak, vanilla, cognac, port wine, spices and good bitterness. Full bodied and really long lasting aftertaste with a warming, alcoholic finish. It’s really heavy and I don’t feel to drink very much of this, but really want to swirl it for a while in a cognac glass and meditate for a while as a drink it sip by sip. Definitively complex with aging potential.

Complete total black color with a tan head that soon disappears. Rich coffee and a bit vinous aroma. Full body. A bit sweet and a rich bitterness. Soft to flat carbonation. Oily texture. Rich powerful flavor. Dates, figs, vinous, some alcohol and rich coffee. I think I should have left this one in the basement for some years. Way to rich coffee flavor destroyed everything else.

Cask, at Bergen Ølfestival. It pours an unclear, black body under a minimal sized brown head. There’s a light booze in the aroma, it’s roasted with some caramel and coffee, hints of cognac, and some chocolate. It’s warming, full-bodied and soft on the palate, with lots of dark malt flavors and a pleasant, although perhaps a bit too heavy boozy flavor. Lasting boozy, roasted and coffee-ish finish with cognac notes and some sweetness. An intense and delicious beer I shouldn’t have had so many glasses of. 140906
